I almost had a heart attack.

That would be… words cannot explain, granville.

If only big wishes like this could come true! Dang it!

Well, I got up to the section, once more, about Breakthrough and the voices of the dead. And “hope it”. And “Lacey”.

I may try recording this sort of phenomenon myself.

I’ve wanted to since I read that chapter. I don’t have a tape recorder with a mic tho. Think the computer mic would be OK?

Thank you, granville, for your concern. I do take this seriously and would not just be messing around for the fun of it. I know you didn’t say that, but I want to explain. 😉 I can afford equipment as yet, but hope to in the future. Like you said on the ouija thread, I’m going about all this in a Sane and cautious way. Also, what are your opinions as to the manifestation on the tape? If they are thought forms, would they not be able to skip the mic and go directly to the film? I’m curious as to the origin and method of manifestation!

The latter would be something like Amfortas’ “double,” no?

    You’re not real!

Incidentally, I feel as though myself, granville and Blizzi have our own little obsessive corner here. It’s intellectually gratifying, to say the least: three people with kindred interests who are discussing capturing voices of the dead. Now it’s simply a matter of seizing the phenomenon.

    Glad you’re being cautious.

I don’t know what to make of the voices – you bring up a deep issue as to why they wouldn’t skip the mike and go directly to the tape… but I suppose it could equally be asked why the woudn’t skip both mike and tape and manifest clearly as voices in the normal environment. Why are they “hiding” until we make the effort – and it’s quite an effort – to contact them?

I am torn, as usual, between a reductionist and a paranormal interpretation. I’ve heard some of these online and so many of the phrases and sentences can bear as many as three different interpretations. Is this (reductionism) simply because as with our vision, the brain tends to see or even construct patterns out of random signals? Or is it because “the spirits” can communicate more than one message in a single vocalization? I really don’t know.

The question – if we are interracting with an independent phenomenon – seems to center around the identity of the voices. If they are nonmaterial entities, that’s very interesting. On the other hand, if they are dissociated personality fragments from our own unconscious… that’s very interesting too, because in that case, we’d be talking to ourselves – only we’d be talking to the self-portions not normally known or available to the conscious ego.

Like I say, it’s fascinating, but I’m still in the speculative, rather than the certainty, phase.

I’d agree about the recommended equipment. But if you do it, please exercise caution. If the voices have a non-natural source, it’s not certain who or what they are or where they come from. As Legion says, some of them are deceivers… and if that’s the case, some might be malevolent.

I’d invest in buying the proper equipment. 😉

Similar to what Mick Garris does for Stephen King, but not as laughable.

Incidentally, and this is entirely off-topic, I have been wanting to sit down and write something professionally for years now, but could never conceive of an idea — that I thought — would be wholly relevant, or something that I could go back to and be fond of. After re-reading Blatty’s work, I’d really like to expand upon it all, but from a completely original standpoint. Perhaps even singling out one element, or one minor element that he touches upon, and derive from that a brand-new storyline. I do not wish for it to be a “sequel” or piece of fan fiction by any means. Just something that is clearly inspired by where Blatty is coming from, but, likewise, somehow unique.

Let’s pick at each other’s brains and attempt to strike some inspirational chords in my system.

Be careful not to drool on the keyboard. Yeah, miniseries is an intriguing thought. It could be like Masterpeice theater LOL

An intellectually gratifying obsessive corner… I like that! Yes this interests me. If they are MY thoughts, escaped from my brain and talking to my tape recorder, then if they are capable of that, why not talk to ME directly? Is it because if I heard a voice I would NOT except it? Think that I’m imagining things… But a peice of equipment; possibly, unconsciously, I feel it is infallible (or less fallible) and I am not. If they are spirits, why not talk to me directly? Perhaps they do. I, having Colin Wilson’s tunnel vision of normality, can’t hear them… Unless I try. We may have limitless powers, if it were not for our ignoring them. If we believe, how far could we go?
