It’s the other way round according to Blatty.

Imitation, as they say, is the sincerest form of flattery. Is it possible that on some level the charactor of Kinderman was loosely based on the wonderful and not-entirely-dissimilar Columbo. The Columbo character probably first appeared in anthology tv series in the 50’s before transitioning to stage in the 60s before finding it’s perfect medium on tv in 1969. There were always loose comparrisons between the detective in the Frech film Diabolique to Columbo and again to Kinderman as well as which charactor may have served as inspiration for which other charactors. Anyone more fluent in the history of these charactors have any thoughts?

Jagged is right … I heard this from Blatty’s mouth on one of the excerpts somewhere.

Probably, each evolved independantly. Some fans of the excellent cult series “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” still insist on overt similarities between Darren McGavins’ charactor and Falks’ beloved detective. Each fine actor probably developed their own classic charactor independantlay. Yet casual research reveals “Columbo” existed in media prior to the publication of Blattys’ novel featuring “Kinderman” in supporting role and certainly predates the film by many years.

Yes, Blatty said the complete opposite in the audio commentary of The Exorcist and in his book, From Novel to Film.
