A very intriguing project, to say the least! Thank you for your email, Benjamin – I am going to post details on the main page straight away, if you don’t mind.

As for recommendations, without-a-doubt the best writer/commentator and ‘expert’ on The Exorcist I have ever met through this site is EKM (Erik Kristopher Myers). His reviews and articles are stellar and I really think you should approach him about this project – he’d be perfect for it!

I will forward you his contact details in my email reply, and also email him personally inviting him to reach you in case he has missed this post.

Of course, you might also (obviously) want to approach the man behind many great Exorcist texts (the best, in my opinion), Mr. Mark Kermode. I have no recent contact information for him, however.

Exorcist fans and CaptainHowdy.com regulars, this is your chance – reply at will! Offer suggestions and make comments. This will be a great project for CH.com to keep an eye on!

Now THIS is very interesting! I find this really intriguing to get into. I too am a writer and critique many films including The Exorcist. I’ve also obviously have had many things to say about Blatty’s The Ninth Configuration (Twinkle, Twinkle, Killer Kane) and his adaptation of Archard’s play A Shot in the Dark into the excellent Inspector Clouseau film.

Here is my essay for The Exorcist. It is on the bottom of this site’s page πŸ™‚ :

    Captain Howdy & Greg,

Thank you for the warm welcome and support. I am trying to reach Kermode as I write this and would love if you could have Erik Kristopher Myers e-mail me (at my other e-address, the one I contacted you by recently).

In regards to posting details regarding the book, can I e-mail you with some more information then?

I already have four people on board and expect this to fill up very soon…

Greg, I will be e-mailing you now, so here’s hoping I can add you to the list of essayists!

Ben, I offer my encouragement for you and all involved on this project there on the main page (as a comment). But I would also like to request coverage of Blatty’s Elsewhere short story, in case it’s in fact a different beast than Neverwhere.

Thank you, good luck, and God bless.

    Hello —

Is this essay contest still open?

BadLocust77, it’s not a contest as such – more a request of interest. Fire away.

    Friends,

I am certainly open to more submissions. The book is two-thirds full, so there’s still room. So far, so good, as there’s some excellent essays being written. It’s going to be a great book…

    Ben,

In case you haven’t read my e-mail I just sent you…

What’s the page count you’re looking for for submissions? I believe I can certainly make this deadline! And, if I may, I’ll be writing on either ‘Elsewhere’ or ‘Demons Five, Exorcists Nothing’; haven’t decided which.

    Thanks!

Just to let you know Ben, I haven’t forgotten about our exchange. I’m having a lawyer friend of mine go over your contract. I was also wondering about essay lengths myself.

‘DEMONS FIVE’, 5000+ words. Excellent! I’ll get on it.

Thanks! Now then, as a participant I intend to take this project with the utmost seriousness, and therefore would appreciate some kind of guarentee that my piece will make the cut — barring, of course, that I should waste everyone’s time and turn in a) nothing, b) something unfinished, not grammar/spell-checked, or, something resembling “not the assignment”.

So, given that I intend to give this 200%, what kind of guarentee might you offer me and my colleagues involved here? I appreciate your offer to pay us, but just as importantly, well, can we have your word on this?

I’m sorry, I’ve been burned before, and it’s never fun, please understand. Thanks, Ben. πŸ™‚

    Respectfully,

    M.I.K.E.

    M.I.K.E.,

I understand and appreciate your honesty. Well, I can assure you I have SIGNED the contract for the book with McFarland Press, so it’s definitely on. It’s a legal binding document now, so this will DEFINITELY be published. Being due lat next year, I’d say we’d see the book in print early 2009 (such is the publishing schedule of academic presses), but I can assure you that this essay is a greenlight and will be published. As the editor, I highly respect the essayists I work with and will certainly not change the essay in anyway. You have my word, as an editor and as a man of God.

Hope that helps. Please e-mail me at khraftstar@yahoo.com for more details and contract…

    Thanks, Ben.

Incidentally, anybody have or read this…? Ullyses and the Cyclops, a childrens book by Mr. Blatty. Here’s all I know:

    http://www.serendipitybooks.com/firsts.html

“166. (Blatty, William P.). ULYSSES AND THE CYCLOPS: A Tale from Homer’s Odyssey by James J. Cullen with William P. Blatty. (Los Angeles): Micro Classics, (1956). First edition of this children’s story by the author of Rosemary’s Baby. Pictorial boards. Illustrated by Kay Vallejo. Scarce. Fine. 150.00”

I’m genuinely intrigued by this. Who knew Mr. Blatty wrote kids books?! Let alone Rosemary’s… Hey, waitasecond! πŸ˜›
