KeymasterI’d be excited with David Fincher directing, and I’d be very interested to see what Paul Thomas Anderson could do with it. These two directors are probably the only two directing at the moment who could hand a new Exorcist film the kind of realism an people/religious-focus the film should be based around.
For a more quirky result, maybe the Cohen Brothers?

ParticipantI did like what Zack Snyder did with Dawn of the Dead. A remake with a twist.

ParticipantUwe would be perfect, to guarantee its box-office destruction. Unfortunately, the Germans closed Uwe’s financing source (tax law hole) and so… Uwe had to leave the big budget boondocks: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3i1f048e311710f2fbd98c7b8bdcd3fb63

ParticipantI hope for the sake of all the fans of this wickedly scary movie that Hollywood does not make the mistake of trying to capture lighting in a bottle. I, for one think that the movie works because there wasn’t all this CGI crap that goes on in movies now a days.I point out the attempt that Hollywood has done to remake horror movies like Halloween and at the end of the day they failed to capture the essence of the original movie. I know that Hollywood could care less of my feelings since movie making is all about the all mighty dollar. So as a fan of this classic horror film i cringe on the idea that Hollywood could even think on a remake. Sorry guys, just throwing in my 2 cents.

ParticipantClint Eastwood, though he would NEVER do it, he has the patience that is needed for such a story. If not him then maybe Mel Gibson, even though I am not a fan of his nor a fan of remakes, but he seems to be obsessed with religion so maybe he can do it better than say that talentless hack Harlin.

KeymasterTwo very intriguing suggestions, Xorcism. I hadn’t thought of those two and you gave great reasons why they might suit directing an Exorcist remake (*shudder*).
Welcome to The Exorcist Fansite, by the way. 🙂

ParticipantThank you for the welcome, Mr. Captain Howdy, nice to be aboard.

Participantmaybe Mel Gibson
It would be extremely interesting to say the least. Gibson is a devout catholic and somewhat controversial among the Hollywood elite considering his statements about Jews.
The Passion of the Christ was a good film and I think that he could do a good job with an Exorcist remake.

ParticipantMel Gibson WOULD be good. Theological, and packing a punch, it’d be sure to, pending a quality script… Maybe two punches. He could do it.
And any violence, blood, gore — assuming it fit the story (fat chance, but anything’s possible), and the story was actually good — he’d actually know what he was doing. This goes for any remake of the original film, or of “the prequel” (as a singular film)… or A prequel-sequel, conceivably taking place between *the prequel of your choice* and the Friedkin film. Just give Gibson an Exorcist film.
Let’s see now, looking at history: Blatty dug The Passion of the Christ… Paul Schrader’s Exorcist prequel was filmed concurrent with Gibson’s film at Cinecitta… kind of makes ya wonder of Blatty and Gibson have ever spoken. I mean, really… COINCIDENCE?! Such a film would give Gibson another “Catholic”/Christian story, and a chance to chart new cinematic territory for himself.
Anyway, his depiction of Satan in the finest film on Jesus Christ to date (considering his portraying Christ as masculine yet deeply loving toward humanity as a whole and to individuals; not a crowd-pleasing idea for many folks, but, he more or less stuck to the Gospels)…
So… where was I…? Oh yes, Satan coming up the hill with the frolicking demon kids, after the pitiful Judas Iscariot, pause it just right in a few spots and you can see a Satan looking rather iconic and creepy, like a close cousin of a one Captain Howdy. No exaggeration. Similar, no question in my mind. Go watch, and believe my words. 🙂
My 2.29 cents.

KeymasterAt first, I screwed my face up at the idea, but now, the more I think about it and read these replies, Mel Gibson is starting to sound like a reasonable choice.
If only it were up to us fans to decide, eh?

ParticipantI am against an Exorcist remake but if they do it I believe Russell Mulcahy could direct a good Exorcist, he always has his own style, I believe he can do great things if he gets a chance. What do you people think? If not, who would be the best realistic choice?

ParticipantStreisand. “The Exorcist” succeeds in large part to the intensely emotional relationships depicted and the wildly underrated Streisand (as a director) could deliver that in addition to a sumpuously crafted film certain to get oscar nominations.
