Man I wish I was in your shoes! Quite a lot of people your age find the movie to be funny, and I have absolutely no idea why. Anyway if you’re going to watch it I honestly think that you should go out of your way to make it perfect, meaning you should watch it late at night, alone, and in darkness – in order to feel its full impact. It will scare the Hell out of you, thats what its meant to do and to be honest its fun! I hope you enjoy it. 🙂

There is a lot of subjectivity that plays into what scares you. The same thing goes for comedy except that might be a little more broad for most people. I think for me the scariest part of The Exorcist was this idea of a young person getting violently sick and the mother, despite all her attempts, is powerless to stop it.

    aMiRwOw,

You write very well for 14-y-o and from what you seen and read already, you should have no trouble in comprehending the underlying premise of The Exorcist (I won’t spoil that for you because it’s up to interpretation from each viewer’s stance).

In fact, since you have already been exposed to so many “slasher films,” like Saw, you may want to solely focus on the storyline versus the violent scenes … albeit these are absolutely necessary.

You didn’t indicate if you are M/F, so the crucifix masturbation scene may be more intense from a F perspective (not to say that everyone who sees that particular scene doesn’t think it’s extremely violent coming from a 12-y-o possessed girl).

I would rate it, of course, a 10! it’s brilliantly written, directed, and the actors are superior. Just remember that special effects were all done on the stage versus the newer CGI (IF you are watching the original). If you have TVYNS, it’s worth seeing the digitally remastered original version first. This is available in the here.

Read the book if you haven’t already because it will give more insight.

    Welcome aboard!

Yeah, I’d say watch the original version first (some say watch the DVD without the new blue tinting additions) and then the expanded TVYNS. I like both versions and are obviously quite psychologically scary.

Personally I don’t think it will scare you.

Being that you’ve alreay watched a load of horror films already & the fact you’re 14 means you’re pretty much passed the age where films can scare the crap out of you.

Add to that you’ve seen all kinds of exorcisms already on TV shows probably means nothing in the movie will come as a shock.

My advice is don’t treat the movie as a challenge, watch it with an open mind.

I know so many people who’ve watched the film with the attitude of “go on then try & scare me” & then they go out of their way not to be scared. I mean if you went to see a comedy & went out of you way not to laugh, then of course you won’t find the film funny.

I’m not saying you’re gonna do that, I’m just saying when you watch it leave it’s reputation to one side & enjoy it for what it is, which is a great film.

    Excellent points, Fr. Merrin.

“What an excellent day for an exorcism.”

Personally I wouldn’t say that 14 is passed the age where this movie can scare you. I didn’t see the film until I was 15 and I was quite scared of it. I was also a very mature person for my age. I think its an individual thing that one cannot predict, especially via an online forum.

True, everyone is different & age may not be that important a factor. But, I just think when someone says things like

“I’ve watched A LOT of scary movies but none have really scared me”

“I don’t really think I get scared easily”

“And I’ve seen all kinds of EXORCISMS from shows”

then the chances of aMiRwOw being scarred out of their wits isn’t very high. Which is a shame.

Besides I don’t think aMiRwOw is looking to be “quite scared of it”. I don’t think I’m exaggerating to say I was slightly traumatized by the film for while. And if you’re a horror fan & someone tells you about “the scariest film ever” I’m guessing that’s the kind of experience you also want.

I just don’t think from what aMiRwOw has told us that they’re gonna have that experience. It’s no-one’s fault, not the film’s or aMiRwOw’s, generally, that’s just the way it is.

oh man! this generation has been so shocked out of their skulls… it’s sad to realize that The Exorcist could have lost some of it’s impact.
Still kid! give it a try, late at night, home alone, specially if it’s raining.
Turn off the light, turn the volume up.
Enjoy, whether it scares you or not, you are about to watch a great moment in American Cinematography.

I saw it back at a cinema when it first came out in 1974 and at the age of 17 I considered myself to be a ‘ Horror Fan ‘ who wouldn’t be overly scared at all.Let me say I didn’t ‘watch’ that movie as much as I ‘endured’ it.by the time it was over I felt that I’d actually been in Regan’s room the whole time and gone through everything her mother did.I never slept that night and to this day, as much as I still love horror movies, nothing has come close to the effect the Exorcist had -and still has- on me.It totally stands alone in my opinion.

Actually this brings up something funny. Has anyone seen the remake of the Wicker Man? I mean you have to admit the end was pretty disturbing, yet something about the movie made it seem laughable. I mean I’m really not sure what it was but compared to the Exorcist the new Wicker Man was little more than a sick joke. Does anyone have any idea what is was that the Wicker Man director did so terribly wrong that the Exorcist director didn’t, or was it just a stupid concept?

It reminds me of what Billy Graham once said about the film- that there was ” an evil in the very celluloid itself” (Something like that-im paraphrasing) I dont believe there is evil in th film- but a lot of elements came together at the same time to create that piece of art- not just the cast and crew-but even the time period in which it was filmed.

Ah, yes, The Exorcist … a wonderfully psychological mystery, horror, and supernatural film that makes each person react different. I LOVE it!

Drexul,I like your last paragraph. As much as The Exorcist has affected me for the last 35 years,I still wish for another movie to actually scare me as much as that did.I guess being only 17 at the time helped plus this movie re-wrote the book as far as horror movies was concerned and I had no point of reference for the things I witnessed that night.Let me also say ( and I hope I’m not alone here )that the nightmares I had – and still have – are every bit as bad as what happened in the movie and seem to dredge up something dark and deep from in my psyche which can’t be experienced while awake. To this day, as much as I love the movie, I still, at the age of 50,won’t watch it alone.
