dsea, I would classify Phelps under the philosophical theory of Kantian Ethics at its weakest point. Under this principle, the theory can not account for fanatics like Phelps. For instance, Phelps falls under Kant’s failure to acknowledge the fanatical tenet that is parallel with those of Nazi’s who believe that killing a certain race of people is righteous and their beliefs should be shared by everyone. This maxim says, “Yeah, let’s kill all the blond-haired, blue-eyed Jewish scum because God said it’s right.” (Hello, Hitler and his minions!). 🙁
Phelps is a trained lawyer with a twisted mind bent on the religion of hatred. His fascist beliefs keep us in contact with the reality that evil does exist in the world in human form. If Phelps is not demon possessed, I don’t who is.
Comparison between Larson and Phelps? Both are guilty of sin, illogical behavior, and bastards to humanity. There is absolutely no virtuous actions and, therefore, they are both examples of living lives that are non-virtuous and their places in the afterlife are those in which can be counted on to be spent in the pits of hell … if they choose to continue their radical and sinful behavior.
Larson = Charlatan
Phelps = Antichrist
I don’t want to stray too far from our subject of possession and the film The Exorcist, but you asked. 🙂
Just my opinion.
