This was a hard one to think of.
If the remake was being marketed as “based on the best selling novel by WPP” rather a remake then perhaps the idiotic remake fetish movie goers and the public would see the original as another adaption.

I somewhat agree with RatBoy’s idea above. If it were a completely new film, taking complete inspiration from the novel as apposed to just remaking Friedkin’s film, it MIGHT be half decent.
The trick would be to NOT call it ‘The Exorcist’.
And, no, ‘The Possession of Regan MacNeil’ doesn’t work, either.

Just call it POSSESSED, it’s simple and to the point.

Except that’s already the title of a horrible possession flick based around the original story Blatty was inspired by, so it wouldn’t really work.

ParticipantHow about calling it:
Satan
Dominion II
Exorcist: Sequel to Dominon
Exorcist: Prequel to Legion.
The 8th Configuration
The Evil Within
God is not with you.

ParticipantMaybe you are right Captain… maybe it would become too obvious… I think the original Exorcist works so well because it is so far away from every horror clichés… no thunders, many horror scenes are in the sunlight and not in the dark…

It’s also the name of my favourite band.

I would leave the newest opening shot from outside the McNeil house at night but remove the “extra” clinic scenes which to me, lowered the quality of the movie.
Leave in the Spidewalk BUT delete out that rather “Comic” look on Chris’ face when she see’s Regan walking.
Finally, film the new death scene with Fr.Karras(Yes, I know Jason Miller is dead” but with CGI these days they could film the resurrection scene and morph the face of Jason Miller onto the actor and to me…that would be great.

ParticipantActually Holy, we weren’t discussing another Version We Haven’t Seen nor a fan edit.
We’re loathing the possibility that a no-talent hack like Michael Bay or Rob Zombie doing a remake/re-imagining of the original.

I could have the chance to direct it, and approach the material from a completely unique direction that made it a companion to the original with a flavor all its own, while being as socially relevant to today’s climate as Friedkin’s film was to the world of 1973/4.

ParticipantWhat a great string here. I’m very in favor of columbiacannon’s idea. He seems to make sense to me and has replied in my string.
Also, can you image if we used the actors of yore to be in the remake Exorcist? Perhaps we could have:
Linda Blair as Sharon Spencer
Max von Sydow as Father Merrin (now that he really is old enough without the makeup)
Ellen Burstyn as Willi or Karras’ Mother (what a waste of talent if she played either part, but she’s known for cameos)
Father O’Malley as Tom, President of University
Pete Materson as Dr. Barringer, Clinic Director (as reprise of his original role)
Arthur Storch as the Psychiatrist (as reprise of his original role)
Ron Faber as Chuck, Assistant Director / Demonic Voice (another reprise)
Donna Mitchell as Party Guest, Mary Jo Perrin (another reprise)
Roy Cooper as the Jesuit Dean (another reprise)
Bill Blatty gets his cameo backAnyone else? I think the remainder are either dead or too old or no longer in entertainment.

KeymasterLet’s list the PROS and CONS of an Exorcist remake and keep it simple:
* Begin your post with an ALL CAPS heading as to weather you are stating a CON or a PRO.
* If you can, keep each CON and/or PRO unique to its own post.
* Try not to repeat any PROS or CONS already stated. For instance, I’ll start below with the most obvious post…

ParticipantIf they remake the film, which would be a mistake, I really hope they cast Stellan Skarsgaard or Max von Sydow as Father Merrin. But I doubt that.
December 17, 2007 at 11:59 PM #19766fatherbowdern
ParticipantEither choice is good with me. But von Sydow coming back would be the best in my eyes. But, I too doubt it. Anyway, I’m against the remake and my editorial above is nothing more than poking holes in a ridiculous remake.
