There isn’t any certain evidence. Karras comes across what he thinks is evidence, but then that gets ruled out by alternative naturalistic, psychiatric and/or scientific explanations. That’s the cat and mouse game Pazuzu plays with Karras – and Blatty plays with the reader.

Blatty is the best writer. 🙂 There’s a part in the book when Karras is studying Regan’s EEG and he finds no fluctuations in the graph. Hysterics always seem to cause some odd fluctuations, so Karras thought it was something he could use with the Bishop as an argument that Regan was not a hysteric and therefore was conceivably possessed.

I wish, so badly, that Blatty could extend the novel. In the ‘Fear of God’ commentary, he said that he was going to write another 250 pages, up to the point when Merrin dies. So the book would have about 500 pages!

in one of the talks with karras and the demon it speaks of the holy water and how it tried to trick him by faking that it “Burns”…the proof is all around those talks…

I think at the time when she recieved the mark on her stomach “help me” and like previously stated the eeg flucuatiopns by sofia, it was pretty much obvious. But what would happen if one used the ritual of exorcism on one that is not possessed or rather has a mental problem?

What evidence is there in the book that Regan’s Possession may be genuine?

There is a terrific little shop near where I live that specializes in witchcraft. I’m forever there browsing for candles, crystals or Tarot cards & chatting with the gals. They like to talk about spells they saw on “Charmed” & debate which ones work & which ones don’t as if this wasn’t an Aaron Spelling tv show. (stoppoing time, for anyone interested, is ‘real’ according to the clerk who happily demonstrated her “Heroes”-esque ability. No kidding.) People believe what they wish & that’s great. My beliefs don’t allow for demonic possession or the power of incantation beyond their ability to make a fine fiction.
