Re-reading these nifty volumes reminds one just how prevelant “The Exorcist” was in popular culture in the early to mid 70s. Volume 1 of Essential Marvel Horror reprints largely the chronicle of “Daimon Hellstrom – The Son of Satan”; an exorcist spun off from “Ghost Rider”. “The Son of Satan” evolved quickly into a standard super-hero comic typical of the genre. Volume 2 reprints the more obscure “Father Gabriel: Devil Hunter” (from “The Haunt of Horror”) which was more unrepentantly derivative of “The Exorcist”. The 70s were an especially innovative time for the comic industry & it’s a treat to see these editions made available for collectors.
Damien Hellstrom actually frightened me as a young boy. I loved the way Damien was portrayed when he joined the non-team “The Defenders”. Eventually he married Patsy Walker, The Hellcat. Really chilling story lines. Well done!
I very fondly recall Damien’s rogue sister, Satana…
Santana also has her solo adventures reprinted here as well as the “marvel Team Up’ type adventures leading up to her early demise. DC did a few maxi series in the 80s & 90s called “The Night Force” by the creative team behind the classic “Tomb of Dracula” which handled the theme of demonic possession rather well without abandoning their roots as a horror comic for the more traditional superhero fare readers expected. Colon, the artist also worked extensively on both “The Son of Satan” and “Demon Hunter for Marvel.
