I've been feening to ask this question ever since I joined this group but I never had the nerve. The question I want to know is was Regan the one desecrating the church? I particularly want to know about the desecration of the statues of Jesus and Mary. Was Regan down in the basement sculpting phalluses to defame the statue of Christ and if she was how did she make them sight unseen and how did she get to the church to attach them? Also was Regan the one who crapped on the altar? I always thought it strange that nobody noticed a 13 year old girl walking to church at night with phalluses in her hand. Somebody please explain how she pulled that one off.

Blatty leaves it to our imagination. My guess is that Regan scoped out the church and knew what times had the least traffic. Used to be that Catholic churches were open very late, before vandalism became a problem. I picture her going into the church, wearing a backpack out of which she took plastic bags, one full of her own feces, another clay, and then she brought out some paints. The phallus would not have been pre-made, it would have been a hurry-up job slapped together in the vague shape of a penis, then daubed with paint which also went on the main body of the statue to give it a whorish, dissolute appearance. Regan had to work fast and quietly, of course. After emptying her fecal bag on the altar, she also placed the blasphemous Latin text into the altar card sleeve. She then packed everything up and snuck out of the church.

I get it. I always pictured Regan down in the basement sculpting phalluses because in the book it mentioned that Regan sometimes spent whole days in the basement by herself until Chris asked Sharon to move her typewriter in the basement to watch Regan. I assumed by the time Sharon moved her typewriter Regan had already finished her “art work”. As for feces on the altar I just assumed she got on the altar about 5 minutes before the elderly priest came in and did her business as I did think the priest noticed it was a steaming pile of manure. I also assume Regan operated in stealth sometimes in the early morning to desecrate the church when everybody else was in bed. She also used Sharon's typewriter now in the basement to type the obscene altar card.

Or … just take Regan's mind and soul out of the equation.

Imagine one of the many demons that ultimately took complete control over Regan's body by possessing her in the early morning hours of the church desecration.

Now, think of the pleasure that this deity (or deities who shall be named “Pazuzu”) took in destroying a blessed and holy sanctuary.

Overall, focus on the goal that “Pazuzu” had to obtain in seeking final revenge against their archenemy.

To me, the answers lie in the namesake.
