ParticipantI am not trying to change anyone’s opinion on the E:TB movie but I would like to point out some things that I think lots of people are missing about the film. Most of you (and myself once or twice) have stated that DOMINION is the better of the two films. I have rewatched the film and I must say that this is no longer true.
The village was supposed to be on the verge of an explosion but yet in Dom. it seemed to be pretty happy. In E:TB, the place seemed dark and depressing. The chucrh was also more dark and mysterious in TB. The girl who played the lead in DOMINION was actually pretty wooden compared to Izabella’s believable performence in ETB.
The exorcisms in both films I thought were pretty silly. But one had a little bald man with a diaper floating around doing jedi tricks. The other may have been a ripoff of Regan but adleast it was someone scary. The dry-humping and the cock comment was a little much.
Also, ETB had mystery to it. You thought Joseph was possessed but in the last minute, Sarah was. And this gave the film a twist and made him exorcise someone he had fallen in love with. With Che-Che, you knew it was him the entire time and the ending was just pretty so-so.
I also think that TB tried to incorporate stuff from the other films. With the mental ward shots. That was just like EI and EIII. And the big band music and the cards, just like III.
The ending shots were good in both films with Merrin walking away. I thought that both were handled well but I like the “It’s Mr. Merrin” “It’s Father Merrin” thing better. And the music as he walks away in his famous black coat was awesome.
The Nazis were definatley handled better in TB. It made it MUCH more dramatic that it showed clips throughout the film. The part with the guards marching and then the Nazis was just cool. I think that having him remember it is segments is better than just having it played strait forward at the beginning.
I have to admit, TB seemed like an Indiana Jones movie at times. But I really think that the film is better than most people let on. And most people don’t even know DOMINION exists. That is the fault of Morgan Creek though for not having more publicity and a world wide theatrical release. My uncle actually came home the other day from the video store. When I asked him what he rented he sais, The Exorcist Trilogy. He had gotten Exorcist: The Beginning, The Exorcist, and The Exorcist III. When I told him there was an Exorcist II and another version of TB. He didn’t believe me.
Well anyway, just thought that someone would be interested and hopefully you might have a better respect for what is not a half-bad film.
