Witch of Endor
ParticipantMaybe it depends on whether you are a man or a woman and at what age you saw the film at.
October 4, 2009 at 11:59 PM #22033KarrasRosary
ParticipantWell, I’m a woman and as I said the first time I saw the movie was when I was about 7 and now I’m well… older.
October 5, 2009 at 11:59 PM #22036Witch of Endor
ParticipantHmmm. Suspected you were a woman. Could it be that you have a phobia of men in general? Have you ever been abused by a man? This could certainly taint your view of life as well as films you might see.
October 5, 2009 at 11:59 PM #22037KarrasRosary
ParticipantFirstly, I’ve never been abused, by anyone, also no fear of men! And secondly, what has abuse got to do with liking a CHARACTER from a movie? I know loads of people who admire Father Karras and they have never been abused and neither one of them has a fear of men! Why are you on this site if you’re going to pick faults with what people say? You shoudn’t just throw accusations around when I asked a general question. You might think I’m weird or something for watching the movie, but what does that say about you to think up a question like that to ask a stranger?
October 6, 2009 at 11:59 PM #22041Witch of Endor
ParticipantI do not think you are weird. People have suggested that I have been sexually abused before too, which I haven’t been, but that is part of the reason I asked the question. Fearing Karras more than Regan, wow! You have to admit this is not a typical reaction! I am sure there are many explanations for it, but fear of men, abuse or bad parental experiences with the father figure could definitely be some likely explanations, especially for a 7-year-old girl that would typically be in the phase of development where she would be obsessed with her father. This is also a time when many psychologists believe girls are the most vulnerable to abuse.
Don’t forget there are tonnes of theories floating around that Regan was an abuse victim and this is what the film is about. I can certainly understand why a girl going through abuse at the time she watched the film could associate Regan with herself and “father” Karras with an abusive father for instance. Don’t forget that Karras hits Regan near the end of the move near the part you refer to where he becomes possessed. Could this trigger a memory of physical abuse of a daughter by her father? Hmmm. I wonder.
One final question might help shed some light on this mystery. What is your religion of origin.
BTW I truly am sorry for hurting your feelings. I was legitimately trying to understand what was going on in your mind, and I was right about you being a woman so why not go all out with the next question eh?
October 6, 2009 at 11:59 PM #22042KarrasRosary
ParticipantAbuse never entered my head when I watched the scene. It wasn’t Father Karras hitting Regan that bothered me, in fact, I don’t blame him. I would have done the same for everything she was putting him through. I know she was possessed and everything, but that’s not the point. The whole thing got to him and that is a natural reaction what he made. Even before that end scene, it was Father Karras’ very presence that scared me, so it has nothing to do with abuse. It was the fact that he himself had to resort to being possessed that scared me and the fact he sacrificed himself for her, who led him to do it anyway.
And, I never even knew my father to be abused by him and I know for a fact that he would never even do anything like that, so you can’t just assume when you watch a movie. It’s wrong to even suggest it.
My religion has nothing to do with it and why would you want to understand what is going on in my mind? You’re supposed to be on here to talk about the movie, not delve into people’s minds. The things you mentioned never entered my head. What is going on in your mind to ask a total stranger those things? I’m really shocked by that.
And besides, if I wanted to see a psychiatrist, I would talk to Father Karras.
October 7, 2009 at 11:59 PM #22045KarrasRosary
ParticipantThanks Ryan :), but I’m finding it quite difficult to ignore this sort of talk from a complete stranger who thinks they can re-write my whole life-story with abuse and fear of my own father!
Different people are scared by different things. What a person may find terrifying, another may find hilarious. It’s nothing to do with anything personal, as I said it never entered my head about the abuse. It was Father Karras himself who scared me.
For example, on the head spinning scene, I laughed at Regan’s head spinning, but the close-up of Father Karras when he says “amen” really got to me. But that doesn’t mean my life is shit and full of abuse, and it’s got nothing to do with never knowing my own father either, so can you tell me what your problem is with the whole thing????
And can someone just get back to the original idea of a forum and discuss it properly. Maybe answer my first question about Father Karras, rather than acting as a psychiatrist and pulling apart my personal life?
October 7, 2009 at 11:59 PM #22048KarrasRosary
ParticipantThanks you guys for your understanding on my point of view. 🙂 I didn’t expect an interrogation everytime I came on the forum! So thankyou again!
My childhood fear of Father Karras turned into something else, and now I love him to bits! I wouldn’t call it obsession 😛 but I find him so sexy and handsome. His brooding gets to me even to this very day.
Also, I’m so sad that Jason Miller died. I only found that out recently and it really upset me. But he will forever be Damien to me and lots of other people, I think.
Long live Father Karras

ParticipantI can definitely see how someone could find Karras’s character unsettling. His intense face, black hair, and brooding always gave me a feeling of uneasiness. And his inner personal torture seethes from his character. So I totally agree.

Participanti think witch of endor is playing with you in some kind of sick twisted way,all you were doing is asking peoples veiws on a certan carachter in a movie, and he starts to do a some kind of psych profile on you, what a wanker
October 7, 2009 at 11:59 PM #22044Ryan
ParticipantKarrasRosary, welcome to the forum. I recommend you ignore the crap said above.
October 7, 2009 at 11:59 PM #22043Witch of Endor
ParticipantWell I am a bit surprised by your reaction here. How the idea of abuse could not had entered your mind when watching the film is beyond me. It is because of the social taboo that the film capitalized on that it scares most people. The Exorcist is a psychological film. How one would expect to understand why its frightening without going into psychoanalysis I don’t know. You asked a personal question about why the film affected you differently from other people so you’d expect it to require a personal answer. I wonder why you are so bothered by this?
You say you never knew your father? Hmmm. Do you think this could have anything to do with things?
Come on guys, someone back me up here. Is it usual to be more afraid of Karras than Regan or not?
If something happened to you to make you more afraid of Karras than Regan then you have my deepest sympathies.
Take care.

ParticipantWell then I guess its the group consensus that I owe Ms. Rosary an apology. I did not mean to be offensive but psychoanalysis is where I am at right now. Maybe I let my own ideas taint my perception of others, but please don’t take it offensively. That’s all.

Participant“Amen…”
October 8, 2009 at 11:59 PM #22054fatherbowdern
ParticipantDear KarrasRosary:
I enjoyed your question. I haven’t had time to engage in our site in a while. Once again, I read the same rhetoric from Witch of Endor. Actually, many individuals are not writing much on here, including me, because of this member constantly lashes out at everyone and everything. Witch does not contribute to the site at all. In fact, Witch will needle you and pick everything to death from a “pretending to be naïve†to the egregious zones. [Personally, and without cruelty insinuated, I believe Witch has a form of mental retardation. Witch definitely rode the “short bus†to school.]
You have already answered your question for yourself and many others quite … and quite convincingly: “… I developed an interest in him [Karras] and I find him one of the most deep, convincing, handsome, and dark characters in any movie.†I agree with you. The notion that your gender, religion, or whether some form of sexual abuse was in your life are just plain ignorant sidetracks from Witch. My conclusion is that the paragraph is exactly what William Friedkin wanted the audience to feel about this character. He got his wish with a wonderful performance by a wonderful actor, Jason Miller.
Welcome to the site!
