KeymasterHi MattyJ, welcome to The Exorcist Fansite.
I’m not inclined to consider The Exorcist a ‘cult’ film. It remains the highest grossing horror film of all time, changed the way staggered cinema releases occur and prompted a horror style that is still mimicked and used today. The Exorcist survives as one of the most recognizable and often-reference horror films in pop culture.
Having said that, this website alone proves that there are devoted followers who absolutely adore every frame of the film, while most might appreciate it but wouldn’t consider themselves fans. I guess, then; since The Exorcist definitely shouldn’t be considered a cult film, we must be ‘cult fans’? If that makes sense…

ParticipantJust a quick observation from my forensic scientist point of view: I am finding interesting parallels of new fans and researchers who are initiating blogs with the same topical subjects over the past few days.
This is the best place to gather that research. Which leads to me an overall hypothesis that a book and/or research project is in the works simply because the word “research” has already been established in the questions posed … at least twice by two different individuals. If this is the case, I am already assuming the application of credit(s) to the original author’s ideas expressed in their responses will appear in this hypothesized published work. Am I correct?
MattyJ, I would look at the questions of new fans and those doing research. These include Possessed_Fairy (05-03-2009), HannahT (05-03-2009), chardos (05-05-2009), and Jon (05-06-2009).

ParticipantA very interesting question. I do not think of The Exorcist as a “cult” film due to the fact that it doesn’t have the same sensibility that certain films of that genre have such as Evil Dead or Dawn of the Dead. However, I do believe The Exorcist has a cult following like the Captain stated. You have to liken this film’s following you would to the Star Wars or Lord Of The Rings films. These are films that are discussed to no end and have been very successful financially. I think if you were to label The Exorcist as anything it is a Horror/Drama film that has a devoted “Cult” following.

ParticipantHi Capt. I like your response but could you please elaborate on what you mean by “changed the way staggered cinema releases”. I was not aware of this fact.

ParticipantHi everyone,
I’m a massive fan on the film, it’s just genius! I’m just wondering what people think to this :
Thinking about the Exorcist do you consider youself a cult fan of a film, or a fan of a cult film? Or even a cult fan of a cult film!!?
I’m doing some research and seeing what all your feelings are about the use of ‘cult’!!
Any replies would be really appreciated!! Thanks!

ParticipantInteresting … I guess the “research” is over. 🙂
