I have just rewatched Exorcist 3, (Legion) it is actually a really good film, and a true follow on from the original Exorcist, I remember reading Blatty’s book, “Legion” when it was released, and thought that it would make a fantastic movie as a true sequel to The Exorcist, imagine my joy when a film was actually made based upon Blatty’s book,

I was about 28 years old when Exorcist 3 hit the cinema’s in 1990, the opening scenes had that same dark aura as the Exorcist, particularly where the demon is travelling down the streets, and encounters the kintry boy holding a rose on the street corner, the deep gutteral narrative was rather chilling, as we were listening to Damien Karras, “I dream of a Rose…and of falling down a long flight of steps”, and then the doors of the church are blown open as though a hurricane has charged through, it set the tone for the film, and it didn’t disappoint,

The highlight was Liuetenant Kinderman coming face to face with the Gemini killer/Damien Karras in the high security unit, there was an overt sense of unease as we came face to face with the pure evil that eminated from the tormented Damien Karras and the Gemini Killer, Brad Dourif was excellent with his portrayal of James Venamun, aka the Gemini Killer, dark, brooding, sinister, menacing and evil, the underlying soundtrack added to the whole mood of the scene, particularly when the Gemini Killer goes into his rant, it really is unsettling, the yellow eyes of Karras as the demon flicks to and from differing personalities, I think the Exorcism scene was somewhat contrived, but I understand it had to be included due to the theme of the film, this is a top notch film, which has been under the radar and somewhat undervalued, Brad Dourif gave an acting masterclass in this film, his performance was worthy of an oscar, George C. Scott was wonderful as Kinderman, and Jason Miller will be forever remembered for his work within the Exorcist and this sequel.
