ParticipantI adore the complexity of it all.

ParticipantSo many possibilities, as I’m known to say a lot here. 😛

ParticipantAfter reading through the initial pages of the 1990 script a little more, it appears that Fr. Morning was to appear in the opening of the film, paralleling Merrin’s premonition from The Exorcist.
“Oh, no. Not again…”

ParticipantAnd don’t forget: Mary Jo Perrin, from the novel.
PERRIN. Ironically similar to the name of that old Jesuit tomb digger-upper-turned-exorcist, eh?

ParticipantWelcome, Granny. 🙂
And yes… the most conceivable as being realistic in happening: An alternate version of the Legion novel. Blatty, of course, has revised Twinkle, Twinkle, “Killer” Kane into The Ninth Configuration, tying in with the film version, if I understand this right. AND, Morgan Creek commissioning two novelizations — one for the first prequel, and then the replacement. Maybe they’ll “double-dip” here as well, if they own any rights. Then again, they own all FUTURE rights, counting THE EXORCIST III aka, Legion, but NOT — if I’m not mistaken — the current Legion novel, a work created independently of its later cinematic visage. Morgan Creek only own the script. Sooo, while Blatty might not be able to do much, perhaps he create all new or significantly different material compared to what he brought to the lost and released versions of the film. I’d settle for THAT, I don’t know about you guys. 😀
The law can only afford Blatty so much, so perhaps he ought to cut his losses and rise to the occasion, striving to tell the best “Legion” story he can independant of any of the film version’s baggage, concentrating on presenting what could conceivably be — or may as well be, rather — a veritable brand-new novel. The same novel, just improved.

ParticipantThe “air” sound abounds in The Exorcist novel. Merrin “M-air-in”…. Karras. Perrin. And wasn’t Chris’s agent’s name “Jerris” or something like that?
Thanks Mike for letting me know there is still room for an essay. I’m not up for it right now, but thanks as always for thinking of me.
Yeah, that script seems gangbusters… Morning/Merrin parallels, etc. A true sequel, fully of Blatty atmospherics. Oh, that somehow it could be fleshed out into celluloid… or maybe it could be made into an alternative Legion novel… I don’t know how copyright works, if that’s even possible. Mouth-watering prospects indeed…

ParticipantBoy would I like to get a copy of this script…! Mouthwatering. 😐 More, please, Ryan. 😀
By the way, GRANNY: Get this: There’s still MUCH time for an essay of your own, if you care to write one. That’s all I know, for a fact. 🙂 No pressure. Just know: Still time.* 😀
*Pretty sure!

ParticipantMore thanks to you, Ryan. Great stuff, thanks for typing it out for us to read.

ParticipantHE could have done it. It would have worked by Bill’s hand. Morgan Creek… They’re a bunch of whackos!

ParticipantIt really is also interesting to note how similar Morning looks to Merrin; not to mention both of their names beginning with an ‘M’. Then, of course, there is Nurse Merrin in EIII…
I think it is safe to claim that Blatty is fond of his Merrin character.
I also upped this, just because:

ParticipantIndeed. I’ll type it out for you:
11 – Continued:
as the CAMERA gradually speeds up its pace, and is at its loudest, larger than life, as we reach the landing at the top of the steps, a pause. Then, suddenly we are plunging, careening, tumbling end over end down the steps! The SOUND of the SCORE is a terrifying, pulsing ululation created by voices and electronics. But just before we smash against the street:
11A – INT. PRIEST’S ROOM ON CAMPUS (SET) – DAWN
A high-ceiling room austerely furnished: a small bureau, a cot, a crucifix on the wall. Kneeling by the bed in prayer is a venerable Jesuit priest (PAUL MORNING, S.J.) whose face is a map of goodness, strength, and wisdom painfully acquired. We SLAM CUT into a CU of his head jerking up from the resting place on clasped hands, his eyes wide in startled and sudden, fearful realization. His hair is a shock of white. In a dread whisper:
MORNING: Dear God, not again!
We then go to a FULL SHOT of the room.
MORNING (CONTD): Not again!

ParticipantLove it! Great find, Ryan! How nice that Morning was actually scripted, esp. in the beginning. Can you imagine that, plus the morgue scene with dead Karras and Kinderman… May the Fates grant that sometime, somehow, the Legion story can be fulfilled and repaired and filmed… and brought to us.

ParticipantI’ll read anything and everything by him.

ParticipantBlatty should write a work of non-fiction concerning his ideas, theories, and beliefs rooted in or derivied from Teilhard de Chardin’s; the philosophical, seemingly out-there stuff. His thinking transcends the basics of Christianity and Catholicism is some ways, I gather, and it would be fascinating to get a distillation in book form. *heads to petitiononline.com* 😛
