ParticipantI just watched the digitally remastered 25th Anniversary version of The Exorcist on my new 120 Hz LCD television along with a new Blu-Ray home theater system … yadda, yadda, yadda.
Of course, a lot of Blu-Ray players upconvert old DVDs to a faux “1080″ and I was quite impressed with this version of The Exorcist despite the “noise.” Naturally, this remastered version took place when technology worked fine for DVD players so dust spots, etc. were not so apparent.
Ok … “Merry Christmas.” The scene is the introduction to Georgetown with the camera sweeping through D.C. traffic to the back of the McNeil rental home. Does anyone think someone at WB will notice that the building on the right-hand side says, “Merry Christmas?” The actual time in the film is autumn and Chris is walking home from her day of shooting Crash Course with Tubular Bells playing as trick-or-treaters pass her by.
OOPS! WB Memo: Remove “Merry Christmas!” Although, when you watch the “Help Me” scene filmed normally and then reversed for the film presentation, it’s hilarious when you watch Blair’s backward facial expressions … sans the frosty breath because that would get sucked back into her mouth.
New adventures await when the real Blu-Ray is released! 🙂
“She walks off and waves goodnight to the crew across the road. As
she turns the corner and walks down the road, Mike Oldfield’s
Tubular Bells begins to play. She walks through the leaf covered
street on Halloween and sees a group of kids in costume run past
her. She carries on walking and sees to nuns waking in the wind,
with the gowns blowing. She approaches the local chapel and over
hears a voice.”Father Bowdern

KeymasterI kinda like that Merry Christmas being there. I spot it every time. It wou;d feel strange if it suddenly wasn’t there anymore.

ParticipantCap,
You don’t think it’s so far out of sequence? As a kid in 1973, “Merry Christmas” never came until after the Thanksgiving Day holiday. (Of course for the last couple of decades, Americans have been overloaded with heavy marketing for the Christmas season right after Halloween.)
My real point is that the “Merry Christmas” lettering on the building creates an introductory statement, while setting the stage for a late November to late December timeframe in the winter. We really learn it’s Halloween when we see the trick-or-treaters and autumn leaves swirling around on the ground during Chris’ walk home.

ParticipantIncidentally, I just got an HDTV as well as a Blu Ray player, and I did indeed watch the exorcist, I noticed many sounds I had never herd when playing on SD equipment.
I never have noticed the Merry Christmas, however I have always noticed in that in that first Georgetown shot, part of the House is noticeably missing.
The time of year is something that makes me giggle, at least when I watch Exorcist 3, Georgetown looks considerably “Greener” and less cold, yet the Movie starts on the Anniversary of the Exorcism, in the Exorcist it looked much colder, and dead leaves all over the place.
in addition, when Damien’s headstone is shown, the date of death is Oct 9th, however in the Exorcist it seems he died a while after that Date.
