I was watching the original cut of the Exorcist and I noticed the missing airplane sound effect thai is heard in the Georgetown intro. Anybdy else knows what else was added to the new version?

You mean the airplane sound is missing from TVYNS? I've only known all copies of the film to have this sound effect as a transitional intro to Washington, D.C.

I meant the first theatrical run of THE EXORCIST.  The new version has the airplane sound effect. I know many new sounds and music was also added in the new version.

You mean the shot that includes the title card 'Georgetown'?

Yes, I meant the the original version of the Exorcist where the title card says, “GEORGETOWN.” In the new version, you hear an airplane sound effect, same as when Fr. Karras is talking to another priest as Ms. McNeil passes by and catches some of the conversation. It's just something I noticed and that's why I brought it up. Not important.

Yep. That particular sound effect is in all versions of The Exorcist (1973 to Present).

FB, the reason I began this post is because of the missing sound efect in the original. I remember in the theater in 1973, no airplane effect introducing GEORGETOWN,  it was a subtle scene. I know the airplane sound effect is in the original during Fr. Karass conversation with the other priest. I did hear the original with 5 speakers in my car, no plane sound effect, trust me.

I have to concur. I just checked, it's not on the original or the 25th anniversary edition. It's one of the needless things Freidkin has added for TVYNS.

You have to question his judgement these days, especially after viewing the mess he made of the blu-ray French Connection.

I guess age affects us all in the end. I know it's making me cranky 😉

William friedken should've put more energy into his other horror movie, THE GUARDIAN.  I got to see this gem in the theater and he didn't even use his own name on the credits. I forgot the name they use when directors don't want to be associated wiitht their film.  I'm curious about what he did to the FRENCH CONNECTION. I saw the new version of CRUISING with the additional subliminals, but he went too far adding penises entering asses. He adds new music and sounds in this one. Go figure. I hope in the blu-ray of the EXORCIST, he doesn't go too far in adding more subliminals of Captain Howdy. I hope they use the original spiderwalk,  not the blood pouring out of her mouth. I wish they could film Burke Denning's murder as a subliminal. Just use doubles and include it as Chris Mcneil is told by Kinderman that he was killed by a very powerful movie then cut to a subliminal shot of Regan killing Dennings, Your thoughts.

Okay … too much work to pull up the different versions of The Exorcist to “hear”  or not “hear” the airplane sound effect in the segue between Iraq and the MacNeil household on the different releases and TYVNS. I'm sure it will come back again for the blu-ray edition to elude to the fact that the demon boarded a plane from Northern Iraq to Washington, D.C.

What are my thoughts on the blu-ray? Everything you've listed would be wonderful. Let's really hope Friedkin doesn't tinker with CGI this time around (it's definitely not his forte as witnessed through TVYNS).

I do like the subliminal idea (or even a flashback) of Regan/Demon killing Dennings. It could be something quick like the hurling Dennings through the bedroom window. I'm sure they have enough audio of Jack McGowren and Mercedes McCambridge to pull it off successfully. Timing should probably occur in the ending scene to egg on the theory that someone else did it (like Karl). Perhaps at the ending when Regan is looking up at Father Dyer's priest collar, a vague memory hits her (the flashback) just before she kisses him on the cheek.

Please … keep the original spiderwalk and ditch the CGI blood. Add the Washington, D.C. sightseeing filming to build a more bonded relationship between Chris and Regan.

Last I heard the Blu-ray was just a new restoration of the original (and or TVYNS) — not a new cut of any kind.

Works for me if the “and” part is on the Blu-ray! 🙂

I know there has been a restoration, I just don’t know of which cut of the film (likely TVYNS if I were to guess). Both cuts will be on the Blu-ray.

Cap, I thought you posted a news piece on the front page of the site about the original getting a makeover too for the BD. My hope is that WB will use the TVYNS, cut out the CGI gimmicks, and remove the extra minutes. My guess is that TVYNS was restored prior to any of the added CGI garbage making it perhaps easier to update the original rather quickly.

    Here’s to hoping!
