true cult fans!

Hi hannaht,

IMO, “cult movies” are similar to the Rocky Horror Picture Show that are repeatedly shown in movie theaters somewhere almost daily in which the audience members dress up and act out the parts on the screen. Examples: Water pistols to imitate the rain during the storm and performing the TimeWarp. I’m not sure if this occurs in other industrialized nations, but it certainly occurs here in the U.S.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, I don’t view myself as a “cult fan” of The Exorcist, while this film certainly has that status for many others. Also, the word “cult” used for this film may wrongly imply Satanic worship of sorts (that’s just a blink thought and does not apply to every individual).

I was really trying to eliminate any kind of ambiguity regarding the word “cult” my viewpoint. Specifically, when used as a noun, “cult” can mean extremist, religious sect, rites, religions, etc.

However, as an adjective modifying the noun “movie” with the use of “cult,” can be a little dicey as well in that intended use of the word. For instance, as an adjective, “cult” can often be associated with a particular system of religious worship, especially with reference to its rites and ceremonies. “Cult movie” is of, for, or attracting a small group of devotees.

Therefore, I am saying I am a devotee of the film, and this website is a great place to read and share viewpoints about one of the most powerful films ever made. Additionally, I’m not a cult fan of any movie.
