The novel explains what Karl and Willie were doing. You can read it on Chapter One of “And let my cry come unto thee…”

Why am I starting to think more and more that reading the book was intended as a prerequisite to see the film?

Good one, dsea! Thanks, Sofia. I knew the book covered it, but I’m bogged down with Forensic Biology/Chemistry and I read The Exorcist novel a long time ago. So, can you fill us in on Karl and Willie?

If anybody was going to come to the rescue, I immediately thought of you, Sofia! 🙂

Oh sure, fatherbowdern! 🙂 I didn’t want to spoil it in case you hadn’t read it. At the time of Dennings’s death, Karl had been visiting his drug addict daughter, Elvira, supplying her with money for the purchase of drugs and Willie had gone out to see the Beatles.

Carl said he was going to see a movie but went to see Elvira and Willie went to see a Beatles movie.

Reagan wasn’t that difficult to watch because she was heavily sedated.

The creepy part for me was in the movie and the book Kinderman sees someone (Regan) moving around the room when everyone thought she was too drugged to move.

Thank, Sofia … no spoiler for me on that part because it’s just a curiosity I had of late. 😉

Good question … I know the book was published in 1971. However, I can’t recall dates in the book at all. Sofia?

Thanks, Sofia! The movie makes better sense … but, I still can’t see Willie tapping her toes and snapping her fingers to the tune, “Yellow Submarine,” while smoking a joint and shouting, “Peace! Love! I Love Lennon!”

Although, I guess since it’s 1966 she would be watching, “How I Won the War,” which is kind of clever in some way on Blatty’s part. 😉

haha, you’re so nice father! 😀
The novel takes place in 1969 but Blatty used the calendar of 1966 for the dates. Don’t know why. Oh and I think Willie went to see a Beatles movie like etrigan69 said, not a concert.

what year was it when the story took place because if it was supposed to be in 1973 the beatles were no longer together as they split in 1970

HAHA I can’t see Willie doing that either but she’s funny in the book. She loves the Beatles but Karl only wants to see art-house films about Mozart and she hates it lol.

Isn’t it amazing how the movie transformed Willie into the “little old lady” type? Oh, and, Sofia … when Chris and Regan leave the house, we see Willie closing the iron gate and saying her farewell to Father Dyer. Are we to assume that Willie and Karl, like Sharon, are staying in D.C.? Or, is the house their’s (I don’t think so and I can’t remember reading that about them). I really need to go back through the book again (I actually have a first-edition version signed by Blatty, which makes me a little hesitant to “use” it, so I going to have to buy a paperback!). 🙂 Love you comments, perspectives, and vast knowledge on the movie and book, Sofia! 🙂

Father, likewise! I love reading your posts and you’re wonderful.

According to the novel, Sharon, Willie and Karl are staying to close up the house (rental) and then Karl would drive Chris’ Jaguar cross country back home.

Oh, mercy, Sofia … I must re-read the novel for the 100th time! It’s been so long since I’ve read it, that every time you write something, I think, “That’s right! I remember reading that!” You’re a winner, my dear! 🙂

“Fadda” (Is that the right word from the novel, Sofia? Subway, derelict to Fr. Karras. Dear God, I know you can find that whole passage in 3 seconds flat! 🙂 )
