ParticipantThis was a fine read, granville.

ParticipantAww, granny, I would buy a book of your forum posts! Honestly. Agreed about chills, Ryan.

ParticipantNo worries, Granny. Incidentally, everyone else — you’re each invited to e-mail Ben, if you’re interested in contributing an essay. You’re welcome to e-mail him; the rest is up to Ben. E-mailing him is no guarentee of anything, only a chance to see what the deal is this late in the game; again the deadline’s technically already passed, but… if you think you have what it takes, e-mail him! It can’t hurt.
Cheers!

ParticipantIf you’re too modest, we need to brag about yourself to you. 😉 Keep up the good work, my friend.

ParticipantMIKE, thanks for taking the time to explain the essay book to me and typing up all the pertinent info. Bluntly, the time constraint is probably too pressing – my summer is turning out to be far busier than I had thought it would be – but I’ll keep your idea in mind. Also I have a concern about quality. For example, having seen Ryan’s url, with all of its depth and literary knowledgability, makes me quite humble and doubting if I am up to the task. Not to mention all the other good posters with great ideas at CapnHowdy. But, again, thank you for your kind words… I am very flattered.
Ryan, thanks for the encouraging words – and for the important correction that the motto was on a card in Merrin’s, not Karras’s wallet. That fact makes the Morning scene work even better as a “Merrin-reflection”.
Blizzi, geez, thanks for the complimentary words. My head needs to go on a diet cuz it’s getting fat from all the nice things folks around here are saying…

ParticipantIncidentally, the way Morning screams “Damien!“ is just… It gives me chills every time I hear it. I agree 100%, granville. Despite the ending going against Blatty’s wishes, he made a fantastic compromise. Morning makes that final sequence. It also gave Blatty the opportunity to finally incorporate Nicol Williamson into something of his own creation. Everybody wins.

ParticipantGood points, except the “What we give to the poor…” is printed on a calendar in Merrin’s wallet, nor Karras’. 😛

ParticipantGranny, or maybe just see if you can write an introduction — which would presumably be less than 5000 words — assuming there is one and no one’s assigned to it yet. Just a thought I had. Keep me posted. CHEERS! 😀

ParticipantYeah, well, your writing skills and style are good as — if not better than — my own, Granny, so I frankly think it a crime if I neglected to push this on you while there’s still time, potentially! 🙂
But the gist is right here, taken from Ben’s post (dated 11-22-2006) elsewhere in this very forum (it’s CURRENTLY practically the deadline, so PLEASE still e-mail him, maybe see if you can recycle or modify an essay you have collecting dust which you can properly MLA-cite — maybe even one of your many great posts refashioned and developed into essay format — or do a new essay very soon. In any case, it’s 5000-7000 words — you can do it! E-mail him about what topic(s) that has not been taken; see what’s potentially available — it’s fairly open, subjectwise — some are doing studies, comparisons, biography, literary critiques on individual works, and in my case a little of all of the above for DEMONS FIVE, EXORCISTS NOTHING. But I’m fairly certain there’s ROOM (that hasn’t changed in MONTHS since my getting onboard) for another essay, so your challenge will be turning it in sooner than later (I’ve been through two drafts, and mine’s yet to be formally accepted — but it ought to! 🙂 — hence my hope for your getting yours locked in) — for the deadline’s supposed to be any day, really. No pressure, of course, but boy would it be SPLENDID to have your critical eye leant to this book — e-mail Ben NOW!!!! Good luck, bro! -M
“Friends,
Long time reader, first time poster, new to message boards, pleased to meet you!
I am writing you all, as I would like to know whether there are any writers here that would be interested in producing an essay on an aspect of William Peter Blatty’s fiction (not the adaptations, but the texts themselves)? I ask, as the other day, I received a contract from an academic publishing house for me to edit a volume of literary criticism on William Peter Blatty. I’d like the study to encompass all his fiction, from “The Exorcist†and “Legionâ€, to “Elsewhere†and even his comedies. I will be able to pay the essayists and the deadline is mid-next year.
If you’re interested, e-mail me off-list at khraftstar@yahoo.com
Thanks again and look forward to chatting with you through the board!
Cheers & God Bless
Benjamin Szumskyj”
Ps. It’s the first-of-its-kind book of essays on the man’s works. Go for it, bro! This is your chance! 😀

ParticipantGeez, Blizzi and MIKE, thanks so much for the very kind compliments.
MIKE I would like to consider your kind offer re: the Szumskyj’s essay book. Could you please tell me exactly how that would work? I.e., are the essays just random contributions or are topics assigned or suggested to avoid duplicate treatments? How does copyright work – are the essays individually copyrighted or does this happen as a group deal when they get incorporated into the book? I’m really quite flattered that you think there may be an audience for my meanderings.

ParticipantYes. Without a doubt, great read. Granny, ASSEMBLE A BOOK of essays or a single piece of writing; 4 pages, 40 pages, 400 pages — you will have an audience. And/or, what would be awesome is if you’re one of my co-essayists on Benjamin Szumskyj’s book of essays shining light on Blatty’s works. Please say yes to one or both of the above; that would make my day. 😀

ParticipantAnother Merrin/Morning parallel: While Merrin and Karras are performing the exorcism, Merrin must yell “Damien!” to reclaim his attention. The same thing happens while Morning implores him to ‘fight’ at the end of The Exorcist III.
“DAMIEN!”
Morning even looks quite like Merrin…

ParticipantDamn fine catch, Ryan!

ParticipantI think we knew subconsciously; but only Ryan put his finger on it. 😉
