ParticipantI have indeed seen it. It is a very good film. One of the best of 2006 that I have concluded and probably Del Toro’s best film yet. In fact, his earlier film, The Devil’s Backbone, which is another good film is somewhat similar to Dominion. Anyone seen these similarities to comment? 🙂

ParticipantDevil’s Backbone is excellent. Very much in the same tone of Dominion, indeed. He was one of the first directors associated with the project, which I find just fascinating. Dominion scarier with him directing? Not if he shot the same script Schrader contractually shot. Even so, The Exorcist saga is right up his alley. And/or if a remake ever happens, he’d be the guy to hire, if I were in charge of things. He and Schrader have a wonderful way with actors; creating the horror of real-life tragedy, people at odds with another. Intense and unforgettable.
Pan’s Labyrinth was good, as well. Best fairy tale flick in ages.
Hellboy, underwhelming given its source material.
Did Mike Mignola work on Pan’s Labyrinth at all? I thought I saw his handiwork in places.

ParticipantI watched Devil’s Backbone for the first time yesterday & I thought it was excellent. It was a proper ghost story in my opinion.
Not necessarly a scary film but I think most other films try to hard with the horror side of things & then the film falls apart. This film works brilliantly on all levels.
I agree that Devil’s Backbone has a similar feel to Dominion. But like ManInKhakiExorcist said I’m not sure sure Del Toro would of made the film scarier as he would of been working with the same script.

ParticipantI loved Pan´s Labyrinth. It´s an amazing motion picture. One of the only few horror/fantasy movies post 2000, to be really scary and brilliant.

ParticipantDel Toro claims that the greatest inspiration on his filmic work was Blatty’s THE NINTH CONFIGURATION, which Blatty takes great pride in.

ParticipantI think I heard that, EKM. Incidentally, del Toro ought to be the one to remake The Exorcist. Great choice, anyway.

ParticipantDe Toro produced THE ORPHANAGE, which is a Spanish-speaking film that has yet to be released in the US. However, Blatty, being a member of the Academy, received a screener for Oscar purposes. Apparently, the film contains a direct hommage to NINTH CONFIGURATION, specifically how ORPHANAGE ends. i won’t spoil it for you, but it’s pretty clear where the inspiration came from.
