I think Witch of Endor has a superanalytical mind that likes to delve into the whys of things. ๐Ÿ˜‰

And Rosary… I would feel tense around Father Karras.

Thank you , Fatherb!! I’m saving all the scans, of course.
Do you subscribe to youtube? I’m always making videos based on the novel and upload them there. I’m doing this project of the novel in audio read by Blatty, and I add scenes from the movie (in black and white):

Hey, Fatherb, are those scans of the first draft screenplay or of the original script?

In the novel, you know what Regan is saying in reversed English:

“…danger. Not yet. [indecipherable] will die. Little time. Now the [indecipherable]. Let her die. No, no, sweet! it is sweet in the body! I feel! There is [indecipherable]. Better [indecipherable] than the void. I fear the priest. Give us time. Fear the priest! He is [indecipherable]. No, not this one: the [indecipherable], the one who [indecipherable]. He is ill. Ah, the blood, feel the blood, how it [sings?].

Here, Karras asked, “Who are you?” with the answer:

I am no me. I am no one.

Then Karras: “Is that your name?” and then:

I have no name. I am no one. Many. Let us be. Let us warm in the body. Do not [indecipherable] from the body into void, into [indecipherable]. Leave us. Leave us. Let us be. Karras. [Marin? Marin?]…”

All my posts keep getting deleted.. I don’t understand. ๐Ÿ™

The novel posits a logical explanation for the name , ‘Captain Howdy’, of course. It may indicate a guilt complex caused by the absence of Regan’s father.

Here’s the excerpt where it’s mentioned: (Chapter 1, ouija board scene)

“Chris tried not to frown as she felt a dim and sudden concern. The child had loved her father deeply, yet never had reacted visibly to her parentsโ€™ divorce. And Chris didnโ€™t like it. Maybe she cried in her room; she didnโ€™t know. But Chris was fearful she was repressing and that her emotions might one day erupt in some harmful form. A fantasy playmate. It didnโ€™t sound healthy. Why โ€˜Howdyโ€™? For Howard? Her father? Pretty close.”

Father Merrin talked to Chris about this in the novel: ๐Ÿ™‚

“Now, Damien,” he went on, “how I wish I had a name like Damien. So lovely.”

“Where does that come from, Father? That name?”

“Damien?” He looked down at his cup. “It was the name of a priest who devoted his life to taking care of the lepers on the island of Molokai. He finally caught the disease himself.” He paused. “Lovely name,” he said again. “I believe that with a first name like Damien, I might even be content with the last name Glutz.”
