ParticipantAgain, I am troubled by the various ways this film begins over the years. Maybe someone can help….
In the original theatrical version, as seen by me when the film was first released in the 70s, the usually silent Warner Brothers logo (which zooms toward you slowly then comes to a halt when fullscreen)…was accompanied by Jack Nitsche's “Crystal Glass and Voices” music cue. It was eerie and ominous, as again, this Warner Brothers logo was usually dead silent in other Warner releases.
When the VHS tape of “The Exorcist” was finally released all those years ago, I was dismayed to see that the Warner logo was dead silent…they had removed the initial crystal glass effect. I actually was so frustrated I CALLED Warner Brothers and after being shuffled around a bit, got a friendly guy there who promised he would check into it. A few days later he got back to me! He said….” The print we used for the VHS release was directly from William Friedkin's own personal copy of the film.” So apparently even WF didn't have the right version lol
Later, they have added it back, as I recall, but I'm not sure if current Blu Ray versions have it the way it was in theaters. I watched the film last night on Amazon (it was free for Amazon members) and this time, the Warner Brothers logo was just some modern “WB” standing there doing nothing….but at least had the “Crystal Glass” cue playing as it should.
So …..can anyone tell me whether recent DVD copies of the film feature the red Warner Brothers logo zooming toward you WITH the music playing?? I would just love to have a Blu Ray copy of the film exactly the way I saw it at the movies for the first time!
Thanks!
Tom

ParticipantI felt like it was way over the top and tried to appeal to the modern “over the top” audience. It just need any of that stuff, William F. called it right the first time. Lean, mean, simple is better (especially the ending!)….
