ParticipantHi, there’s a new Exorcist drama on BBC One called “Apparitions” that started last night.
Now we all know how badly the subject of demonic possession can be handled, so all things considered I thought this show handled it very well.
It also got some good reviews after last nights first episode so here’s some info on it:

ParticipantTrue, everyone is different & age may not be that important a factor. But, I just think when someone says things like
“I’ve watched A LOT of scary movies but none have really scared me”
“I don’t really think I get scared easily”
“And I’ve seen all kinds of EXORCISMS from shows”
then the chances of aMiRwOw being scarred out of their wits isn’t very high. Which is a shame.
Besides I don’t think aMiRwOw is looking to be “quite scared of it”. I don’t think I’m exaggerating to say I was slightly traumatized by the film for while. And if you’re a horror fan & someone tells you about “the scariest film ever” I’m guessing that’s the kind of experience you also want.
I just don’t think from what aMiRwOw has told us that they’re gonna have that experience. It’s no-one’s fault, not the film’s or aMiRwOw’s, generally, that’s just the way it is.

ParticipantPersonally I don’t think it will scare you.
Being that you’ve alreay watched a load of horror films already & the fact you’re 14 means you’re pretty much passed the age where films can scare the crap out of you.
Add to that you’ve seen all kinds of exorcisms already on TV shows probably means nothing in the movie will come as a shock.
My advice is don’t treat the movie as a challenge, watch it with an open mind.
I know so many people who’ve watched the film with the attitude of “go on then try & scare me” & then they go out of their way not to be scared. I mean if you went to see a comedy & went out of you way not to laugh, then of course you won’t find the film funny.
I’m not saying you’re gonna do that, I’m just saying when you watch it leave it’s reputation to one side & enjoy it for what it is, which is a great film.

ParticipantGreat stories guys. X man I can’t believe you saw that film at 4!!! I’m guessing the only saving grace at that age is that you were probably too young to take it all in. But, I respect the fact you saw it in the 5th grade just to make sure the psychological damage all Exorcist fans have experienced was complete:)
& I’m loving your running narative Kinderfan, keep it coming.
My tale isn’t as heavy as X’s but I’ll share anyway.
Basically I’d been obsessed with this film years before I even saw it. From about the age of 9 I tried to get my hands on “the scariest film ever” but to no avail.
So I made do with the sequals which just feed my obession even more. I even tracked down the novel Legion which freaked me out & not because of the story. Nope what put the shivers down my spine was the fact that in the book instead of Chapters there were dates & the last date in novel is March 20th… my birthday!!!
Obviously being a rational 11 year old I became convinced after reading Legion that it was my destiny to watch this banned film. But, I was still unable to get my hands on it.
One Saterday me & my friend decided to visit a part of London we’d never been to before. In the town centre there was a book shop which had The Exorcist & I obviously bought. Sadly being a couple of dumb arse 12 year olds we didn’t know how to get back home & we ended up walking back home along a motor way for 3hrs. Which brings me to another point, The Exorcist kinda brings me bad luck, more of that later.
So I’m 12 & in high school & decided to put the word out about me wanting the film. After 2 weeks of no luck suddenly a mate lent me it. I was so excited I watched it first thing when I got home. & guess what, it wasn’t The Exorcist it was WWF, it turns out my mate was full of shit. I was not a happy bunny.
Anyway, all hope was dashed. I had asked the entire grade & nothing. Fortuantly there was one friend who had aunt who had recently came back from Sweeden with a VHS. My friend lent me this VHS promising it had The Exorcist on it & this time I wasn’t disappointed. I won’t bore you with the psychological damage it caused, we’ve all been there. But, after I watched the film like after I read the book I had a terrible run of bad luck. The very next day I was electrocuted from a wall socket, the day after that broke up with my girlfriend & the day after that I fell out with nearly all my friends.
I was happy as can be on the Monday after wathcing The Exorcist finally after so many years but by the end of the week I was as low as I’d ever been in my young life.
But, it all worked out OK in the end, thank god. I see the whole experience in a ying yang kinda way. I had the joy of the film but I had to balance it out with the pain afterwoulds, but it was worth it.

ParticipantI must admit I’d love to watch The Exorcist again like it was the 1st time.
So with Halloween coming up I might have a nice night in with my best friend Mary Jane. She’s a Lemon Drop junkie too apparently.
I must say it’s great to see some old & new blood on the forum. So welcome back Kinderman & a big HELLO to X. It’s great to have you guys here.

ParticipantLooks kinda poor which is a shame cause I think the premise is actually quite good.
Still, I’m gonna watch it anyway.

ParticipantI don’t have a ferocious jones for this movie. I’m just taken taken aback by your attitude.
The way I look at it is this.
If you met someone who’d never seen The Exorcist & you were trying to convince them to watch it & they were coming up with stuff like “yeah but it’s a horror film & they’re all the same, with cheap special effects & the like, I might watch it on my psp on the way to work”, you wouldn’t be happy about it because you know as a fan that The Exorcist is a multi layered film that can only be appreciated when watched properly.
Same goes for The Dark Knight, that’s all.
Do yourself a favour & check out Memento. I’m not saying you’re gonna like it, but after watching it you may understand why I was a bit taken aback by your comments.
Here’s some info on Memento & Christopher Nolan.

ParticipantI fail to see what Superman Returns has do to with The Dark Knight. & if you actually took the time to see this film you’d realise what a poor comparison it is.
Do you know anything about the director Christopher Nolan?
He’s actually adverse to CGI & tries to avoid using it wherever possible, opting instead for real action. As a result the main action set pieces are done for real, NOT IN A PC.
Have you ever watched or heard of the film Memento? If you have then shame on you for thinking Nolan would direct just another cgi flick, if you haven’t then shame on you for dismissing a film when you CLEARLY know nothing about.
I mean everyone is entitled to their opinion on a film they’ve seen, but you haven’t even seen this film & yet you’re jumping to the conclusion that it’s just another stereotypical action film.
& don’t sit there thinking I’m some 14 year old who’s convinced Star Wars is the greatest film of all time & that I only go to see films like Lord of the Rings & now I’m convinced The Dark Knight is the best thing since the God Father. I’m Not!!!
But hey, whatever, it’s your loss. Maybe when another excellent film comes out you’ll take the time to look at the people who made the film & decide to give it a chance instead of letting your prejudices cloud your judgement.
Father Merrin
ParticipantYep that’s very sick. Especially as some of the scenes were shot for IMAX. So that kinda means people who only see it in a normal cinema aren’t getting the full experience, so watching it on a psp whilst going to work is just pointless.
Father Merrin
ParticipantI don’t believe in God or the Devil so the idea of possession being real is a non starter for me.
I was brought up a Roman Catholic & I watched the film when I was 12 when religion & the real world for me was kinda blurred, as a result the film scared the shit out of me LOL!!!
But, I never had religion drilled into me so as I’ve got older & religion not meaning anything to me anymore I’ve come to appriciate The Exorcist just like any other classic movie.
Father Merrin
ParticipantI thought it sucked. If you want to watch a film that deals with the story of Annaliese Michel in a mature & believable way watch the german film Requiem (2006).

ParticipantI know what you mean about rip off of a rip off, with all the snake & fire.
& disabled being ‘healed’ theme is a good one, I over looked that.
But that’s what makes The Antichrist curious. It’s not just a dumb rip off, it’s a thoughfull rip off!!!

ParticipantThe thing about the TDK is that it’s bridges the gap between Super Heros movies & proper movies.
I swear to god the opening scenes could of been out of Heat & the subjects it’s touches on goes way beyond any Super Hero movie before it.
Kinda like how The Shinning or The Exoricst can be talked about seriously as proper movies, not just being talked about in the terms of their own genres. So the TDK can be talked about seriously as a proper movie to a point.
Is it as good as proper movies like Heat or A Clockwork Orange? No, but for a film that has a man running around dressed like a bat to be taken seriously on any level is a great achievement.
And should be seen in the cinema!!!

ParticipantFanedit.org is defintely the place for it. They love horror films over there & there’s so many ways to share now it makes it a lot easier for the editor to get their versions out.
Father Merrin
ParticipantI think the main reason for the film being so poor is that it can’t decide whether it’s about Merrin or Reagan.
I mean Lamont was sent on a task to save the reputation of Merrin yet the movie is barely half way through when the Merrin plot is dropped & the whole emphasis is on Reagan.
I think if you are gonna edit this movie you have to choose whether Merrin or Reagan is the main focal point.
