“I dont think you’re hearing me, so I will say it again. There is no subliminal imagery in The Exorcist.”

But by your criteria, how could anyone tell?

“sub·lim·i·nal /s?b?l?m?nl/ Pronunciation Key – Show Spelled Pronunciation[suhb-lim-uh-nl] Pronunciation Key – Show IPA Pronunciation
    –adjective Psychology.
existing or operating below the threshold of consciousness; being or employing stimuli insufficiently intense to produce a discrete sensation but often being or designed to be intense enough to influence the mental processes or the behavior of the individual: a subliminal stimulus; subliminal advertising.”

The key word here is “operating” the images in the exorcist were specifically designed to have an effect below the level of consciousness. They are therefore correctly described as subliminal.

Actually, Jagged the definition does include “operating”, but at a different level in terms of psychology. The “subliminal” images we are all blogging back and forth about can be seen to the naked eye (the quick flashes). However, I am really referring to my post above about true subliminal images/sounds by the nature in which they are “operating” below the conscious level. Example: For years groceries stores use “canned smells” that are entice buyers to purchase certain items; e.g., breads, fruits, cakes, etc. These are real in terms of “operating” below the level of consciousness even though you use one of your five senses to fill your cart with three dozen loaves of French bread that you don’t need! 🙂

Jagged, the definition of subliminal that you gave describes it as being below the conscious level, and is quite accurate. The theory of subliminal messages was that you wouldn’t know it was happening, but it would somehow influence your behavior UNCONCIOUSLY. Thats what is meant by “operate”. There remains no evidence of any subliminal imagery in the Exorcist. The images in question are scary because WE SEE THEM.

Incidentally, the theory of subliminal images and advertising has been subsequently challenged over the years, especially after the guy who did the original research admitted that he lied about the findings. So there is also no evidence that real subliminal editing ever had any effect on the Unconcious mind.)

Slam234, I take it you are very anal in every thing you do in life, it is evident in how you carry on this very subject. I dont mean to be an ass to you but DUDE! let it go.You made your point and still nobody cares what you think if it is ,or if it is not SUBLIMINAL images that appear in the movie.Heck, Captainhowdy even tells you from the start that he is aware that subliminal is probably the wrong term to use but since we all know it by that term he rolls with that.I get what your trying to do but you are spliting hairs and you loose people when you get on this crazy notion that you are right and the rest of the world is wrong. LET IT GO SLAM234.

Guys, this thread is getting a little too personal… It’s great that we’re passionate but please don’t make personal comments toward people. Keep it on topic.

Hey Howdy, I love your site, but I must say I’m a little confused about the “subliminal” section. None of the demon flashes were subliminal at all, in fact they were quite visible, and intentionally so. Subliminal imagery refers to images that are not visible to the naked eye, and (in theory) picked up by the subconcious mind. That was never the case in “The Exorcist”.
