ParticipantIt's been quite a while since I posted on this message board. Hello fellow Exorcist fans what doin? I recently re-read “The Exorcist” for the umpteenth time and every time I read the book I find something in it I never noticed before. Alright is Sophia still on this board cause I have a question to ask about the book? When Chris McNeil took Regan to the Barringer Clinic in Dayton Ohio what was the treatment option the psychiatrists gave Chris in regards to Regan? I remember Chris telling Father Karras that she wasn't going to put Regan in “a goddamned asylum”. Also did Regan act out at the Barringer Clinic like she did at home cursing and with head on backwards? Was there any footage of Regan in the Barringer clinic in the movie cause I don't remember any?

ParticipantI'm sure Sof can answer all your questions. I do recall a black and white image of Regan at the clinic as seen on one of the clinic's monitors. She's kind of muttering and Tubular Bells is playing on the soundtrack. However, I think this scene was deleted from the 2000 “director's cut”.
Also, iirc, in the novel, Regan did not exactly consciously act out in any colossoly baffling fashion, but one of the clinicians wrote something to the effect, “also, some telekinetic effects have been observed” – i.e., Regan exhibeted some poltergeist or other paranormal phenomena at the clinic. I'm certain Sof can check my claims, correct them if necessary, and give you the big picture.

Hi AllBahianGirl! Aww, of course I'm still on this board. 🙂
Well, granville has already answered (gosh, no need to correct your claims, you're too kind). I can only add that some of the paranormal phenomena that happened to Regan while at the Barringer clinic, was the writing on her skin. Letters would show up on her chest, then disappear.
The treatment option the Doctors gave Chris in regards to Regan was to have her hospitalized. That's when Chris said, “I'm not going to put her in a goddam asylum!” Since she was so opposed to Regan being hospitalized, they suggested exorcism as a shock treatment.
Oh, they also mentioned that they took a shot at narcosynthesis treatment. What is that exactly, granville?

No, it's still there. 😉

Hey, Sof – I think it's just the use of narcotics to induce different types of hypnotic states. From that, I postulate that this technique was used on the POWs in The Manchurian Candidate.

Thanks, hadn't noticed it – must be the narcosynthesis blocking my awareness 🙂
