ParticipantPROMETHEUS, the prequel to ALIEN, directed by none other than the series sire himself, Ridley Scott, returning to the sci-fi genre after a long absence.
Â
The first full on trailer for Prometheus looks amazing. It very much has the feel of the original 1979 “ALIEN”, albeit with even better visual effects (not that ALIEN's was any slouch).
Â
This story takes place some time before the original ALIEN, and it looks every bit as chilling. I'm not sure quite what the bad guy/creature is in this film, but we do get a brief glimpse of the “space jockey” and the derelict ship from the first film in this trailer.
Â
Here it is in high-def:
Â
Listen for the musical howls in this trailer….very much reminiscent of 1979's ALIEN trailers. :) I really hope lightning strikes twice for Ridley Scott.

ParticipantWhy do people keep calling this a prequel to Alien? It's NOT a prequel.
December 27, 2012 at 2:20 AM #26725Steve Dunlap
ParticipantBecause for a long time, even during its production, it was being heralded as a prequel. In the ALIEN Anthology Blu-Ray, Ridley Scott was still calling the project the ALIEN prequel.
I didn't even know until recently that it was being denied as a prequel. Â
So, it just happens to have the DNA of Alien, takes place in the same universe before the events of ALIEN, but it deals with somewhat different creatures.  This, I do like, because it's almost Lovecraftian.  The ALIEN universe is big enough to play around in and have new adventures/terrors.  It's an ALIEN universe story, but not a true prequel.
Â
No need to get irked over a minor detail. 🙂

ParticipantI'm not getting irked but I recently watched Prometheous for the first time with the mindset that this was a prequel and I saw little to no connections to the Alien saga except a space jokey and a cameo that looked tho be a baby xenomorph in a jar and the Weyland co…… but still xenomorphs fossils can clearly be scene aboard the ship on Predator 2 and we all know that Predator 2 is not a prequel to Alien.
Â
Perhaps if people didn't keep telling me that Promethius was a prequel to Alien, I would have went into the movie with a different mindset and better be able to judge it on it's own merrits.
Â
BTW Merry Christmas Martok.

ParticipantAnd I hope you had a Merry Christmas too, Ratboy. 🙂
Â
Yeah, it got a little confusing exactly how Prometheus fit into the ALIEN universe as far as whether or not it was actually a prequel, or just a story set in that universe in a time that just happened to take place before the events of ALIEN.
Like I said, when I bought the Anthology Blu-Ray set, Ridley Scott clearly said he was working on his “ALIEN prequel”.  So that was an impression that was left with pretty much anyone who bought the blu-ray, and even the impression that many folks got watching the promotional material leading up to Prometheus' release.  It really wasn't until shortly after Prometheus was released to theaters that Ridley and company started saying that “while Prometheus sure shares ALIEN's DNA, and takes place in the same universe, it is not a prequel.”
Â
If there is one thing this movie succeeded at doing, it was splitting the ALIEN fanbase right down the middle. I loved Prometheus, and eagerly await any sequel(s) for it. 🙂
Â
I still buy it as a prequel of sorts for the same reasons you stated.  The engineers, for one thing. Plus, the overgrown facehugger and the chestburster that looked like a pre-evolutionary xenomorph.Â
Now, here's a question: Did you note, when the movie ended, the way that the doctor recorded her “final log of the Prometheus”?   It sounded an awful lot like Ripley's “Last survivor of the Nostromo” recording in the original ALIEN.

Â
Yes, it could've been a nod to Ripley. I think I remember seeing Sigourney Weaver's name on the credits as a producer.
Â
It's like the Phantom Menace. I went into the movie with high high expectations and was sort of let down.
Â
In contrast, I went into The Walking Dead with low expectation and was very impressed and can't get enough of it.

ParticipantHighly understandable, considering that part of the movie's trailer campaign was “Questions….will….be…answered!” For many folks, it seemed to leave more questions than answers…kinda like the Matrix trilogy.
Â
Walking Dead. You know, I have the first season of that on DVD and still have not watched it yet. I've heard from tons of people that it is an outstanding show. I need to knuckle down and check it out.
Â
Another show I've really enjoyed (and did watch the first season of) was Falling Skies. 🙂

Â
I'm not much of a zombie fan which is why I went in with low expectations but once I started watching, I couldn't stop. It has the right amount of balance between, action, character drama and adventure. As I mention in another thread, it suceeded on many levels where Battlestar Galactica re-imagined failed as being the ultimate post apocalyptic adventure drama series. Â
Â
I like Falling Skies but I like Walking Dead more and that's saying alot considereing that I like sci fi more than horror.
Â
AMC is having a marathon on New Years Eve of the first 2 and a half seasons so if you have a DVR, I highly recomend recording them.
