ParticipantI'm sure this has probably been posted somewhere on here, but I can't find it. I thought of Sofia and if she hasn't seen this, she is sure to love it.
We now have a record of MacLaine being very succinct about her relationship with Blatty and confirmation about who Willie and Karl truly are in the novel as well as confirmation that Sachi is indeed on the original cover. Things many us already know, but it's good to have something from the source:

ParticipantConfirmation according to Shirley anyway, not true according to Blatty and Harper/Rowe.
I expect it's one of those old myths that repeated often enough becomes truth in the mind of whoever repeats it.
Personally I've never seen any resemblance between Sachi and that cover. however hard I squint 😉

ParticipantAwww, thank you Father B! <3 Actually, I was the one who posted that video on here a couple of years ago. :)) But it was very sweet and thoughtful of you to post it here and say it was especially for me.

When Shirley was filming The Children's Hour, Sachi had long straight hair without any bangs. The picture on the cover could really be a distorted image of her face.

ParticipantYou're welcome, Sof! I knew I saw it somewhere!
Anyway, yes, I agree that the picture is hard to detect as Sachi which I am positive that MacLaine would have had fits over it was “squint identifiable.” Quite frankly, I'm getting so old that I don't know what Blatty has even said about the cover or even if he confirmed it as Sachi but I want to say his story matches MacLaine's; i.e., snapping the picture of Sachi during The Children's Hour television show . Something in the cobwebs of my mind seems to want to knit together a story or two in which Sachi was actually teased by classmates in high school about the photo to which I believe she denies being her.
Yeesh. I am getting on roll for these run-on sentences that I would have used a red pen on in the past when reviewing papers. I guess that's why I'm enjoying blogging … no real need to care for grammatical nuances.

ParticipantBlatty said that he had been accused by Maclaine of stealing a photo from her house to use. Which he strongly denied.
Whereas he says the cover was created entirely by someone at Harper Row entirely without his input and is not nor never was Sachi.
Which makes one of them mistaken or a fibber. Take your pick.

Blatty's story seems very plausible considering most publishers typically create the artwork for dust jackets for the hardback copies and then paperback covers follow with that same artwork. Even if it's not Sachi, that picture instilled a sense of intended dread …
