I hear ya, Mikey – I just think you’re forgetting to compare two things, here:
1 – the work of Tarantino & Rodriguez
2 – every other film out there.
There is something genuinely special about their work that goes beyond the usual popcorn trash. I’m not saying they’re all-time classics or anything – but they’re guaranteed value-for-money every time.
…Except Once Upon A Time in Mexico… and SPY KIDS etc. Duds. 😛
Kill Bill was brilliant and I think a very clever way of mirroring society’s perception of ‘sign of the times’.
One thing is always going on behind the silver screen when their flicks play, and that’s genuine love for the production being presented to you. It’s not just about a beefy cheque from the studio; they desired and loved every frame that flickers past and it shows. I think that’s important these days and I take comfort in that because there isn’t much of it left.
E:TB was ALL about the money and not much else; and they SHAT on the film we love in the process.
