ParticipantRemember that the demon continually screamed Merrin’s name before he arrived. It knew he was coming.
I take the demons eyes to mean; “Finally. You are hear. Get ready for it. This will be the final showdown. This time I will win”.
The demon desperately wanted to foil Merrin as result of earlier humiliations and defeat. The look on Regans face in this shot is very focused, almost hypnotic. There is a sense of tension.
That’s my take on it.

ParticipantNever thought of that before………..Regan MUST have sneaked out of her room and got it!
Jaygon
ParticipantExcellent Czar!
That sums it up rather well. Now as magus stated, all we need to find out is where Pazuzu fitted into this choir of demons and why merrin was so intent that there “is only one”.One evil perhaps?Jaygon
ParticipantThe book strongly poses the question: “Was Regan posessed or was she faking it?”
I think that this was one of those instances to make us wonder if she did it herself!!
That aside, I’d say it is one of those things we are not supposed to know,Just like how Kinderman found the mini-statue of Pazuzu that Regan made at the bottom of the steps, the desecrations in the church and the shadows in the window.Jaygon
ParticipantReally?I must re-watch that peice.I always thought that the strange peice of clay looked very like thestatue of Pazuzu
Jaygon
ParticipantYes…………..I always wondered why she did react so violently to the tap water??
Jaygon
ParticipantAs I stated in another thread, it is the introduction of the concept of Legion without addressing whether Pazuzu is one of those demons or if it was “one or many” in the original.
We should e-mail Blatty himself!Only he knows!Jaygon
ParticipantAh!But are there many demons in Regan???
She seemed to portray the personaly of Dennings after she killed him but as Merrin states “There is only one”.
I have been trying to debate this out on another thread!Jaygon
ParticipantBut to answer the original question I think the scene implied:
“Round 2”Jaygon
ParticipantI’m pretty sure that Pazuzu ended up in Georgetown because Regan was playing with the Ouija board. The reason it bothered with Regan?
Well, according to Blatty’s book, it was to make the world doubt that any god could exist, should such a horrible thing happen to a little girl.
The Heretic hints that pazuzu PICKED Regan because she is one of God’s special creatures, one of a few that can beat Pazuzu, therefore he is attracted to her and those others (“But perhaps the locusts come BECAUSE of the boy”)
Regan had probably been playing with the board for awhile. The significance of the first scene, I believe, is Merrin coming face to face with an ancient evil. One he has met before.
The dogs fighting represent the sound of the beast and an animalistic lust to do harm to each other.Of course, Exorcist:The beginning gave me shivvers when I first saw the possesssed Sarah and how similar she looked/sounded to Evil Regan. What a shock Merrin must have got when he first saw Regan. It must have been quite painful.

ParticipantI always thought it was the shadow of Pazuzu, which appeared throughout the film!
Jaygon
ParticipantI always figured that both scenes were important !(although confusing)Earl Jones was never a witch doctor, that was just a “dream” of Lamont, which symbolised that Kokumo was one of the chosen few who could and had resisted Pazuzu. He was REAllY A SCIENTEST with little recollection of what had happened to him as a child but who was interestedin the nature of the locusts.
I think the film became confusing as it dealt a lot with dreams.Pazuzu was Regans dream name and to call forth the demon in order to fly with it seemed to cause the caller to brush wings with it,as later happened to Lamont.
This is why nobody in the village knew who Kokumo was.he was long gone,a scientist.the rest was a dream.Jaygon
ParticipantGreat guys,
i was just wondering if it were from an old TV show or something!Jaygon
ParticipantThe more i think about it, the more I think that it was never JUST Pazuzu in the original.
“Where is Regan?”
“In here with us”“It will bring us closer together”
“you and Regan?”
“you and us”
When merrin states there is “only one”, I think perhaps that he is referring to the fallen angel. They are all part of the one fallen entity.
Sure pazuzu was there, we saw the statue, the evil face etc.He seemed to be the dominant evil but it makes more sense if the being known as “Legion” was there from the beginning.
A poster on another thread pondered as to why Pazuzu or whoever managed to Dispose of Morning quite so quickly.Remember that this was not part of the original novel.Morning was created solely for the film so was not part of Blatty’s plan.Afterall, the demon’s power was a psycological attack. What happened to Morning would have been “far too vulgar a display of power”.Jaygon
ParticipantYeah, I guess. It’s just the way that Chris says , “captain Howdy?”
Regan replies “yeah, you know………..I make the questions……he gives the answers…..”
Chris looks like she’s just realised something and says…………..”ahhh captain howdy”
Always wondered what she was thinking. -
