I always assumed it was talking about Karras. Since Karras is aware that something is going on that he can’t explain through psychology. I think the demon knows that it is dealing with someone that deals both with the science and religion end of the spectrum so that could be it’s greatest threat.

Yeah. That would be heartbreaking for Chris to see. She would remember how it was with Reagan and herself and her grief would be even harder to handle. I think it would make Karris’s first meeting with Chris that much better as well.
Lemme ask you your opinion… when the demon crys,”Fear the priest. Fear the priest.” Remember when Karris is taping her voice for later studying? Do you think it actually meant to ‘fear’ Karris? Karris is the one who actually releases Reagan. He isn’t strong in faith, but he is strong. We always think Merrin because they battled once before. The demon could mean Karris.

Hmmm I never really thought about that. Good observation. What I always wanted to do is insert a shot during the scene in which Karras firsts meets Chris, where Chris looks out and sees a mother and her little girl. I think that would really add something more to an all ready emotionally heavy scene. But sadly not much can be done now.

When I watch that scene, to me, you can tell that Chris loves children. There’s no question. Her relationship with Reagan seems at times somewhat ‘sisterish’. Case in point the way they converse that night in the room about what they’re gonna do on her birthday, about Durke, things of that nature.
But getting back to the waiting room scene, as Chris watches them and smiles, little does she know that thats the last time she’s gonna hear the sounds of children playing, the laughter, so it’s almost tragic. I do feel so bad for Chris.

Also I forgot to ask. What did you mean by Chris seeing the kids wrestle as a nice little sublim?

Not bad Ghetto. I like it. Although, I liked Chris watching the two boys wrestle in the waiting room. It’s a nice little sublim. You’re right on the money about Reagan swearing. It does produce laughter out of the audience instead of shock but I am a sentimentalist, so it’d be very hard for me to cut that one out. Aside from that, it plays out great the way you describe it.
What about the tour around D.C. on Reagan’s birthday? Pictures from that “lost footage” has always facinated me. I would like to see how it plays out and perhaps consider editing it in. What do you think?

I respect your opinions Ghetto, but to me, I think the demon saw Karris as a weak spirit because of his problems with his mother and the fact that he had lost his faith. The demon then used those tools to keep Karris guessing as to the authenticity of the possession. And ultimatley to try and use it to destroy the rite of excorsim. Karris couldn’t quite figure out why some times Reagan showed signs of possession and other times she didn’t.

Well from a certain pov we are in agreement. Karras was weak in faith but the demon knew this as a point to torture Karras. This is why I was happy that the lost discussion on the stairs was re-inserted. Merrin’s explanation which I don’t have verbatim but will sum it up. The demon wants Karras to believe that all these things that are happening prove that God couldn’t possibly love him or anyone therefore his faith would be weakened but at the same time enough evidence was given to Karras to bring Merrin to the demon. In retrospect it was using everyone to get to Merrin.

Well here it is….Well not quite

If I had the technology, the time and the copyright here is how I would change The Exorcist. Not too much but a few tweaks.

First off I would use The Exorcist:The Version You’ve Never Seen as my workprint. While I do have a few minor problems with it I feel that about 95% of how it turned out is gold.

    I’ll number the edits that I’d make/add/delete.

1)Doctor’s exam – While I would keep the bulk of this I would cutt out the scene in which Reagan is humming to herself and then eventually drops to the floor. I think we all get the point that there is something wrong with what remains. Plus an edit like this would delete a potential laugh whereas this scene really doesn’t warrant one. Leave that for when the doctor explains Reagan’s symptoms.

2)Chris’s arrival(right before she finds out about Burke)I really think that the filmmaker blew his load when it came to the subliminal imagery. I would go back to the original film and use that. We all know that there is there is something evil in the house we don’t need flashes of the statue to point it out. I WOULD DEFINETELY KEEP THE SPIDERWALK!!! No tweaks there.

3)I really hate to do this the fans but I would delete Karras’s mother’s image. The one that appears right before Karras’s jumps out the window. If you watch the original cut of the film the way it was shot the window really has character to it. I know that makes absolutely no sense but as soon as you see the window you know what Karras is going to do. You don’t need that reassurance that his mother we be waiting in heaven or anything like that.

4)The ending. Ugh the added ending must go. I know that’s how the book ends, I know that’s how the script ends but it’s too cookie cutter. I like it when the audience is left guessing. Did good win? Did evil win? What did we just see? Plus I hate the fact that you know the remaining audio was destroyed from the original negatives so that is why the music cues up. It looks so amatuerish or like something a student were to do in order to cover mistakes. I want that last shot to be of the stairs…Roll credits.

Now I know it’s nothing too major but I do feel with these few edits they would make the film all that much better. I really would keep in the other additions/subtractions that TVYNS has to offer.

    Thoughts? Opinions? Feedback?

Pretty cool stuff, though I don’t really like some of the hospital changes (but this is YOUR edit so my opinion doesn’t really matter :P).It has inspired me to go ahead with one I wanted to do (which includes adding the original spiderwalk in) and a few other things I’m still deciding on. I’ll probably have to do some of my own colour correction because I’m going to use the original-original (or is that the original-original-orignal?) film.

Now I just need the HDD space..

Wow, these are great! I love it(:
I’ve always wanted to make “The Exorcist 2006-for todays not-as-intellegent-youth” 😛 lol.
How do you do those things anyway? Is there a software required?
