ParticipantHave since re-read the article regarding the court case (on imdb) and Blatty & Friedkin took Warner to court over lack of profits/pay that they supposedly did not recieve for TVYNS.
Though the question still stands. How can it be called a DIRECTOR’S CUT? If anything it is perhaps more a WRITER’S CUT. Since a majority of the changes are what Blatty wanted to see (for instance the happy ending) – if you take into account what he said on FEAR OF GOD.

ParticipantCan anyone add to or clarify this for me? I remember seeing TVYNS at the cinema and when THE EXORCIST title appeared it had DIRECTOR’S CUT beneath the title – though this did not appear on the DVD.
I always found this a little odd as Friedkin states on the FEAR OF GOD doc that the 73 version/original WAS THE FILM as he intended. Therefore why later release TVYNS with the title DIRECTOR’S CUT?
I know I’m not seeing things as I have a poster for TVYNS with DIRECTOR’S CUT again beneath the title.
I also seem to remember reading on IMDB that Friedkin took Warner Bros. to court (?!) over TVYNS being called the DIRECTOR’S CUT.
So my question is – who put the DIRECTOR’S CUT title there & what is the story behind it vanishing? Like I’ve said Friedkin said the original was the definitive version therefore how can TVYNS be a DIRECTOR’S CUT?

KeymasterI believe what may have happened is WB fell victim to telling us what we want to hear. There are so many ‘Director’s Cuts’ being released that they probably assumed they had better ‘go with the flow’ and use that as the title for the re-cut of The Exorcist.
Eventually they figured out that The Version You’ve Never Seen was a pretty catchy sub-title, too.
I think the plain and simple answer is, every other re-release is called a Director’s Cut, so initially they just called TVYNS that as well.

ParticipantI saw TVYNS two days in a row on September 23 and 24, 2000.I NEVER noticed the words “Director’s Cut” beneath THE EXORCIST…

ParticipantI think that the sub-title “The Version You’ve Never Seen” works so much better than “Director’s Cut” for this particular film.
When I saw the phrase The Version You’ve Never Seen I immediately thought, my god I have to relive this nightmare again? (not that it was a problem) What other horrors will I see? I don’t think Director’s Cut would of done it for me. I mean I still would of seen the film…June 12, 2006 at 11:59 PM #14952Father Fletcher
ParticipantHi all thanks for the postings so far -I thought my question was a turn off initially as nobody seemed to respond at first!
