etrigan,
I agree. “Dumbbell” was probably a naughty word like “mother fucker” back then. 😉
At any rate, I agree that Blatty had to know something about this case and used it later in his film The Exorcist III. I’m sorry to say, but this scene is so whacked that it makes laugh every time I’ve seen it.
Also, Blatty did a lot of research and included the levitation scene in The Exorcist based on the cases from various religious and spiritual accounts; i.e., Magdalena de la Cruz and Yogi Subbayah Pullavar. The phenomenon worked in the original, but caused hysterical laughter in the second, skewed attempt.

The endless supply of vomit and conversing with the demon was in there too. For me this case had more in common with “The Exorcist” than the Rob Doe case which really only had writing on the skin.

ParticipantWhen I saw “dumbbell” the first thing I thought was it was either altered for the religious pamphlet or it just shows how silly the account of what happened was.

ParticipantYou may want to check out “Marjoe,” the 1972 Academy Award winning documentary about evangelism from a “forced-to-be evangelist’s” point of view. It is enlightening to say the least.
Ten parts, starting with part 1 here.

ParticipantWell I think I am going to see The Last Exorcism because I am on disability from my hellish job so now I have some free time. I work with co-workers who are very selfish and all about themselves so my doctor put me on disability and now they have to pick up my slack like I’ve had to pick up theirs for the past ten years. Truly Satan is busy on my job though the co-workers doing the most devilment are supposed to be Christians. There is a movie theater near my house that sells the best popcorn and hotdogs so I go there to see any movie even if its one I don’t particulary like. I just love seeing movies about exorcisms maybe because I grew up in St.Louis attending Catholic schools and being taught under the Jesuits that performed the exorcism on the St.Louis boy Rob Doe. Those exorcists like Father Halloran who died in his 90’s in 2005 had laser sharp minds and they were light years ahead in their thinking. The Jesuit hospital Alexia Brothers where the exorcism of Rob Doe was successful was always an integrated hospital even when segregation was the norm in St.Louis aka “Lou’s”.

ParticipantFather Bowdern as a priest you have seen some cases of persons being possessed haven’t you? I’ve seen a few cases of individuals being possessed when I was in the Catholic church and then later Pentecostal church. I remember over 20 years ago when I was in a Pentecostal church there was a little toddler who was possessed and started talking in this deep heavy voice like Regan did in “The Exorcist”. The pastor of the church cast that demon out and come to find out the boy had been molested by one of the staff at the day care center his mother took him too. I always heard that sex was one of the ways in which demons could be transferred to a human being. Some days I wonder if I really saw what I saw when I think back on the possessions I have witnessed. I’ve tried for years to block the memories from my mind but I know that I did actually see what I saw.

ParticipantAllBahianGirl,
The basis of everything is relative to a particular situation or the narrative behind that particular situation combined with the beliefs held by that individual. If you believe you experienced true cases of demonic possession, then you did based on the labeling within your organized religion(s).
Labeling abnormal behavior from a scientific viewpoint is what I believe in. For instance, the molestation of the boy you are speaking of should certainly account for various types of abnormal behavior; i.e., including, but not limited to, speaking in a guttural tone. If a suggestion that the boy is possessed came from any single member of the congregation, that label can sometimes be the only explanation for his behavior.
On that point, this is where I separate: I would seek psychiatric assistance versus exposing any sexually molested individual to another traumatizing event such as the rites of exorcism.
If sex was one of the ways in which demons could be transferred to a human being, then our world is in a lot trouble. 🙂

ParticipantI saw it tonight. Should have saved my 11 bucks… No let me rephrase that, younger people may enjoy this but if you’re older you’ve probably seen this already.
This movie is a mash-up of Blair Witch Project, Exorcism of Emily Rose, Rosemary’s Baby and Prince of Darkness. The Exorcist never comes into it.

Participantetrigan,
You could have really blown that Reveal Spoiler if I hadn’t clicked on it. 😉 😉
Maybe it doesn’t try to have The Exorcist’s ending, but the writers wanted audiences to go away with a question of whether Nell was demonically possessed or psychologically disturbed. Throw the “baby” into the fire and they just lost that toss-up question!

ParticipantI just saw it tonght as well. Being a big Exorcist fan it was just hard to watch. I really don’t know how to explain it. In the theatre I felt loike yelling “Could you hold the goddamned camera still for 5 seconds!” It was.. Yeah.
