ParticipantHey Greg thankyou for the kind review, Ive revised the opening scene so many times I cant count, Many times I went over board, but one of the challanges of editing is finding the proper balance.
And My intention for the opening was not to destroy Paul schrader’s Vison, but flesh it out, with Atmosphere.
I always hated the warner brothers music and stuff during the opening logos, it’s just not rite for an exorcist film, and Of course Recoloring the opening scene is something I really felt was nedded, because on the official dvd it just looks to sunny and warm. and of course I did add that little flash from the gun, As for the music it’s mostely royalty free stuff, that Ive alterd, and I actualy didnt use any Exorcist sounds in the opening, but I did want it to be in the same vain as the Exorcist.
I also inhanced the sound of gunfire a little, as for the title, I can’t please everybody.October 21, 2006 at 11:59 PM #15841Greg
ParticipantSounds good. I thought the gunshots were also emphasized. And boy, do those new sound effects sound like foley from the original film. About the title I see what you mean, maybe you can try and move ‘Dominion’ a little lower in the frame to center it. That might be what’s bothering me more since it looks like something is supposed to show up beneath it. Yes, editing is tiring and tedious, but it’s also about “careful care.”

ParticipantThanks for the input, I’ll fix the position of the title and re-post the opening scene within the next day.

ParticipantHey Hatter,
Very nice work. I love how you did the old day to night trick. It’s also good that you made flashes apparent since that would be true in a darker light. It is a bit dark when I view it on my computer and my screen is at maximum brightness, so you need to be aware that sometimes it looks brighter on your computer or TV than others. A little brighter should be ok.
I like the added original Exorcist sound effect when the SS officer says, “God isn’t here today.” It’s a very nice addition. The dark WB/Morgan Creek logos are a nice touch too. Where is that music there from by the way? It’s very good and very effective indeed. One another suggestion: I do like it better when it does say “Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist” it just feels appropriate. 🙂
Thanks for showing this to us, Hatter!

ParticipantHi hatter76. Thanks for putting up that clip. Please bear in mind I haven’t watched Dominion for a while so my points may be… well… pointless:)
Anyway. Your dark WB/Morgan Creek intro is much better than the original. Like Greg, the openening scene was very dark on my PC, but I do like the idea of the scene being at night & I really like the added sound effects.
I must say I am curious to see what you’ve done with the film. Even though I do like the film (a lot!) I do feel it could of done with a couple of more scares or at the least be a little more creepier. Have you done something along those lines for your edit?
Also, regarding the poor CGI (The Hyenas, the dodgy snake & cow scenes), have you made any changes there?
Once you’re finished with your edit how will I & the good people at Captain Howdy beable to get hold of a copy?

ParticipantThankyou Father Me, for your kind words and input, it is incourageing, and on a project like this you need to me rminded that there are people who want to see it.
The opening scene was a bit too dark but for some reason it looked darker when uploaded, I don’t know why, I wanted to have the revised version posted last night, but having a little trouble uploading.
As for the changes, there is of course some recolorizing in certain scenes, sounds, a little music here and there, a few old fashioned optical fx, nothing digital, I want it to be stuff that could have been done at the time of the original Exorcist, obviously the tools on the computer, but still time consuming.
With scares and creepieness, it’s hard, the scares if any won’t be much, but Creepieness is definetly something I wanted to do from the beginning, but that would be done with the use of color and sounds, Im trying to add More atmosphere to the dark elements of the movie, but the door swings both ways, the ending of the Movie will be more of what it allready is “Hopefull”.
I am useing a few shots from ETB, mostly for a second dream sequence in the film, a Nightmare Merrin has Showing Merrin what could possibly Happen if he Dosen’t Find strength and Make a stand againts the events occuring. As far as finishing the Movie and getting it out to people, Finishing it is Not easy and I dont want to set a specific time period for it, it’s hard because Im approching this as if it were a proffesionaly done re-edit, Obviously it won’t be 100% perfect, but definetly better than what Ive seen in fan cuts of other Movies, inconsistant picture and sound quality, big fat pixels all over the place, I want this to be worth the wait and effort, and hopefully it will be.
with the copies of the Movie, Im not a rich Person, Im not made of Money.
But this is Non-prophet, Ive had afew people tell me that I should atleast charge for shipping, but I can’t do that, Some people don’t have the same payment methods, and the People that do want a copy shouldn’t have to pay for it, because this re-edit is for them as well as myself, alot of people criticize the Movie because of some of the cheesy fx and stuff, but alot of people those people dont cosider the fact that the official release of this movie is still unfinished, and probably always will be, the movie got shafted, then thrown together for an intended dvd release, it didn’t get fair or even standard treatment by the studio, so ofcourse not everything in the movie will be as good as it should be.
Such as the CGI Hyenas and Bull, theres not much I can do, because I dont have that kind of software, but thankfully there is only one scene with Digital Hyenas, and it dosn’t last long.
However I have inserted a close up shot of a real Hyena from later in the film, so that atleast we can se there is a real one in that scene.
with the Bull, I was pretty paranoid about dealing with that scene, but my solution was based on the fact that the first shot of the Bull is actually not that bad, and is much more complete than the shot of the Bull colappseing.
To me the first shot looks like a digital character from one of the star wars prequels, the other bull shot looks like something from a playstion game.
My solution is keep the first shot but ad a little grain to give more texture, the other shot is removed, now the last shot is The More realistic Animatronic Bull head tairing of a piece of flesh from the dead hyena, and it disolves into the scene where Merrin Shows the Mosaics to Rachael.
The hyenas in the rest of the movie was combination of a real Hyena, and an Animatronic one so im not touching those.
The big fx stuff Im doing is for the end of the Exorcism, Have huge rays of white light shooting in from the windows of the church Dome, instead of a little tiny bit seeping in.
The shot Of the Posessed Cheche’s body disapearing has always annoyed me, And something else was probably planned but not finished for obvious reasons.
so know we see the Clearly that the Demon is Leaving, We see Cheche’s har growing back, and his body being consumed by white light, but not dissapearing into thin air, we will also see the wounds on Merrins face starting to heal, then of course the screen goes white and things continue the way we see them in the normal version.
but their is the final shot of Merrin walking out of the Doorway, and disapearing into the Dust,
Im trying to Have it disolve into the shot of him approaching the vatican in ETB, my reason for this is to show him show the Spiritual journey he’s made, his redemption, he’s fully resolved and he knows his place and ready to do Gods Will, and of corse the Movie started with him dressed in black, and I want it to end the same way, but wheather or not this shot gets used is still up to how Many people want it.When it’s completed I will anounce it, and people can contact me through email, with their request for a copy, and the key word is request not purchase.
Because I don’t have alot of money it will be hard enough to pay to ship the copies, so it would be without a regular case or artwork, but will have a label on the disc, it will probably bee in a plastic sleeve or jewl case, and of course one of thos venilla envelopes with the bubbly things inside.
But I’ll deal with that when the time comes, rite now the issue is finish the movie.
I of course will contnue to post updates when theres something worth posting, and little clips here and there.Artwork is something I wanted to at least post for download so that people who atleast have a printer can print it out, of course I rarely have time to mess with the artwork, so that is something that will be figured out later, but I do want artwork, because it would be wrong not to.

ParticipantHatter, fantastic work on those first 6 minutes! I anxiously await the final product.
And I thank you for wanting to include the walk-to-Vatican scene from E:TB. I think it’s entirely appropriate. Thank you.
Incidentally, wouldn’t it be neat (cool) if Morgan Creek got a hold of a copy of your work here and decided to put out a similar “proper” cut of their own (hopefullly with Schrader’s involvement)? That may never happen, so I’m thankful you’re doing what you can here, Hat.
I have every confidence in you and this undertaking of yours.

ParticipantThankyou M.I.K.E., for the continuing support and kind words, It would be great if WB/MORGAN CREEK put together a new release, Put A few Dollars into it, pollish it up, let Schrader finish it his way, give him enough to actually do alot of the things He wasn’t able to do, because They just shoved it on DVD.
A bonus Disc would be great, Give the Movie a Real DVD release. It would be nice if the FAN CUT became a rough draft for a future DVD Release,
But Im not Gonna get My hopes up on that, besides the FAN CUT isn’t even finish’d.
it really is Exhausting work, and thats made worse by how long it actualy takes to finish something.October 25, 2006 at 11:59 PM #15873hatter76
ParticipantTo be truthful, I never thought the final shot in ETB(the movie has bigger problems) it could have been much worse.
but of course as Ive said nothing is set in stone.
With the deleted scenes, I really have tried to improve the quality, but still looks pretty bad, however the first deleted scene with the soldiers marching, and him being reminded of the Nazis, That is in the movie now, but not useing the deleted footage itself.
If you notice in ETB,it’s actually footage shot for the schrader version, with the excepton of a few shots such as Merrin holding the leather impression of pazuzu etc.
Ive taken that scene and, cut out the pazuzu head, and ive inserted it into what I would asume to be the rite spot.October 25, 2006 at 11:59 PM #15874hatter76
Participantat the Moment the first 6 minutes is not viewable, I tried to replace it with a revised version, but that site don’t want to upload, Im still trying other sites, not much luck, but of course this had been the first time I uploaded a clip that big.
October 25, 2006 at 11:59 PM #15872Justin
ParticipantI think the deleted scenes on the DVD are too bad of quality.
October 25, 2006 at 11:59 PM #15871ManInKhakiExorcist
ParticipantHatter,
Please do try to include the “expanded ending”; I mean, if I/we can forgive bad computer effects elsewhere in the film, then given the story-value such a scene has for an Exorcist prequel film, it’s a keeper. I’m not particularly in love with the scene on its own and with the bad greenscrene effect, but I believe it would ADD to this fan cut of yours. I really do. 🙂
Incidentally, so would each of the 6 deleted scenes found on the DVD, so PLEASE see what you can do.
The more “new footage”, the better. The more, the merrier!

ParticipantThanks guys for the input.
The final scene is not a sure thing, but when I have what I consider to be the completed shot, I will post it for everyone to look at.
About uploading the Movie, it’s a good Idea, however My computer is not fast enough for things like that, plus I really have no expeiriance in that, but If someone on here wanted to Upload it, that would be fine, I could send them a copy for that, but of course if it were going to be an internet download, I would want it to be of the highist quality, but Im very open to that Idea.
About the opening being nighttime, I never really saw it that way, My Idea was like those realy dark and cloudy days when it could be noon, but be so dark that it looks like night, but if thats how people percieve it then thats fine.October 25, 2006 at 11:59 PM #15865Father Merrin
ParticipantThanks hatter for your reply. It’s great that your trying to make it creepier.
I’m 50/50 on changing the ending. I get the reason for it I’m just not sure it would work. I suppose I’d have to see to make my mind up properlly.
I was thinking when you’re finished maybe the best thing to do is upload it on the net then people can download it & burn it onto DVD themselves. There are a lot of people on this forum from all over the world & if you’re not going to ask them to pay for P&P it will cost you a lot of money.
October 25, 2006 at 11:59 PM #15864Justin
ParticipantNice work. The new music blends well and is fitting. I didn’t like the idea of having it a night at first but it works well.
Personally I wouldn’t like to see the ETB ending added. For one, the effects in that scene are horrible… Secondly, it would just ruin Dominion’s original ending which is fine as it is.
