… was talking to a fan on another board who thought the film shows a mouth (breathing) tube going into Regan's mouth, which would be incongruous since she had no breathing problems. Also, she is only wearing this gear in one scene, the one where Karras first visits her, so it's not a permanent medical solution. It's obviously not a full-face mask, because her mouth is free to speak to Karras.

I suggested that it might be her liquid Sustagen “dinner” being fed to her because she would not/could not take solid food. I'm not knowledgeable enough about intubation to know if liquid food necessarily streams into the stomach via the mouth, or into the stomach through the esophogus via nasal tubing.

(I had thought that breathing tubes don't go into the mouth at all, but rather terminate in a mask that is strapped to the patient's face. Same kind of thing that sufferers from sleep apnea use.)

So I was hoping someone can clear this up for me:

    1. Does the film in fact show a mouth-intubation in Karras' first interview with Regan? I do seem to recall Regan wearing some kind of mask, taped across her nose to give her the same “bestial look” that Blatty gave Karras in Legion after Kinderman breaks Karras' nose.

    2. If so, is this meant to assist Regan's breathing, or is it meant to feed her?

    3. Why is the tubing – presumably essential for Regan's breathing and/or feeding – present in only one scene?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Yes I think it does in fact. 🙂

Thanks … so I wonder why the gear is absent from all scenes but this first visit from Karras … unless it was just for shock value. Last we saw of Regan, she was “beat up looking”, but next – post-crucifix abuse scene – we see of her is Karras' visit. He opens her door a crack and there's “the new Regan”, staring at him with feral eyes over that bandaged face. We are shocked at how degraded her condition has become since the crucifix incident. We, as well as Karras, are seeing the fully possessed Regan for the first time. But still, it seems like a gimmick because she's not wearing any gear during Karras' second interview, or for the remainder of the film …

I know it was for food. Unless Regan took them out?

I suppose that's a possibility … maybe they sedated Regan and then reinserted the food line…

Yeah maybe. But why was it removed for the exorcism?

I can only guess that the expected acrobatics would rip out the tubing anyway, and feeding Regan would be important than expelling the demon … ?

Also, our posts seem to be posting promptly again.

So thanks to Jason and all who worked on getting this fixed 🙂

Oh yes noticed this earlier. Thank you all involved.

And it’s one of many mysteries to this wonderful film.

because when regan possessed. injures brutally face on her vagina ….. where we see that regan and on the bed. Karras and the meets. throughout that secure with liviti and scars and hair completely dirty because if you do not washed and never had frizzy hair … I think THAT look and impress the spectators and father Karras is a shot of shock … but the tube yet I ask myself when I think regan is injured in the face, it breaks the nose as you can see the cross-section and with a deep cut .. and I think the tube that enters the nose to breathe because her nose and then breathe laboriously split with the tube .. but when you hear that kind of breath (CREEPY) because I think it was ruined because when you turn your head will be broken his neck in the scene of the crucifix. although it is a paranormal phenomenon ….

Broken nose or fractured nose might explain the bandaging, thanks, I hadn't thought of that.

seaview18 said on imdb that Dr. Klein explained that the tube was for food, but that was never mentioned in the movie. It's only mentioned in the novel.
