[Father Merrin]

Howdy Folks,
Last year one of my favourite horror films was was the spanish Zombie film REC. So I was very excited to hear that they had a made a sequal.

Having seen REC 2 last week here are my thoughts.

What I first noticed was how poor the acting was. It was excellent throughout the 1st film but here there was some terrible performances from the beginning. One of the reasons the 1st film worked was because there was an element of mystery to why everything was happening. Sadly the sequal sets about explaning everthing and to be honest I wish they hadn’t. The explanations for the events of the 1st film are daft & the plot for the 2nd film is even dafter & as a result it kinda undermines the 1st film.

The film is also structured differently, which isn’t a problem but as a result it does reveal a major flaw, which is the plot. This film is barely 1hr15mins long. The first 45mins is basically taken up explaining the first film (Poorly) & then the last 30mins is about setting up the 3rd film.

Basically this film wasn’t made to tell a story it was made to bridge 2 other stories.

It’s very disappointing because I wasn’t expecting such blatant cynicism, it’s a product not a film. Some people have compared it to Aliens, but Aliens works as a stand alone film REC 2 doesn’t. Aliens has great action, REC 2’s action is so bad you can’t even see what’s going on.

So if you’re a fan of REC I would approach REC 2 with caution.
