KeymasterArg! I’m jealous! I want to visit there one day, when I can get the scratch together — and when the kids get old enough.
These are great, Rat Boy – when did you take them?

It was quite an experience. A must visit location for any fan.
The stairs were scary because the incline/pitch has very high and very steep. I’m afraid of heights as it is and it took me four beers to work up the courage to climb those stairs.
There’s no way anyone can survive a fall down those stairs.

Here’s some more pics:
As you can see, the current owners of the McNeal house replaced the cast iron fence with a solid black pvc fence.
They probably did this because they were tired of fanboys like me taking pictures.
I have more pictures of the McNeal house to post.

ParticipantRatBoy … what fun! I can see you did the whole Hitchcock steps from M Street up to Prospect Street. In your last photo where concrete (leading to the steps) and the brick pavers (lined along Prospect), did you notice how impossible it would have been for Karras to crash through Regan’s window and land on the steps leading down to M Street? The facade wing was pretty amazing back then to pull off the trick, but it still doesn’t make sense from the film perspective does it (even if you think about the different levels from M to Prospect)?
Alas, it’s also interesting that the owners have the ugliest fence on God’s green earth. I also think it’s funny that black was chosen because of it’s identity with satanic beliefs … especially if you live in The Exorcist house! 🙂
I hope your had your four beers at The Tomb! 😉

ParticipantHi Bowden,
Yes, in the real actual location, Reagen’s window is way too far for Burke to be pushed down the stairs or Karres to jump from. Kudos to Friedkin for making it work on film.
I also noticed either the trees in the yard at the McNeal house are either larger or were possibly added by the current home owners to disguise the iconic location.

Even more amusing is that however hard I try I have never been able to reconcile the external and internal layouts of the property as shown on the film.
Of course I’m pretty sure Blatty chose and described what was in reality an empty spot with a house that wasn’t really there on purpose. Saved any potential ghouls hanging out and harassing the owners. It’s only with the movie that the existing house became associated. I guess it was far cheaper to adapt, extend and use the existing property than to build a complete false property, a brick colonial covered in ivy as Blatty described, overlooking the steps.January 9, 2010 at 8:30 PM #22481fatherbowdern
ParticipantTrue. Plus, we have to consider the initial aerial shot of the McNeil house.

ParticipantI should try to get my parents to take me to the steps for my 16th B-day this summer. We will be in the area anyway. ( I think) Where are they exactly?
