KeymasterNice, Justin. Blu-ray.com also confirms the Blu-ray is region-free. Phew!

ParticipantJust received mine from Amazon this morning. Leaving work a few hours early to go home and watch the movie & extras!!!! Can't wait.

ParticipantNot yet watched TVYNS/EDC (never been a fan in the slightest), but I was thrilled to watch the film in hi-def on a 1080p television. There's a significant amount of digital noise owing less t the transfer than to the film's age and film stock (though any and all digital color work adds grain to an image unless it was shot on, say, a Red camera); but overall, it's a gorgeous transfer, and easily the most lush the film has ever looked. Diving into special features this evening, starting with Mark's brilliant FEAR OF GOD doc, which simply improves with age, particularly when viewed against what passes for “special features” in this day and age.

ParticipantI started watching The Fear Of God doc on the 2nd disc, expecting Ellen Burstyn to start talking, and Mark Kermode appears on screen!
This is the first I've seen of Kermode in The Fear Of God. The 25th Anniversary DVD U.S. edition completely omitted him.
And *still* no Mercedes McCambridge?! I have to go on YouTube to see her interview segment.

ParticipantThe transfers are GORGEOUS! I have a 42 inch SHARP LCD HD TV, ONKYO 7.1 surround sound…
The picture quality is mind boggling, the sound is crisp, seems like you have to really crank it to have the theater experience however, even at low volumes you can hear an obvious improvement over the DVD versions.
The new special features are nice, it's too bad there was no sound to the behidn the scenes footage, real bummer. And I don't understand what's the issue with not having Ms McCambridge on the extra features! It dissapoints!
Still, at $23.00 it doesn't break the bank and the joy I got to see this masterpiece at it's best, is priceless!
Go get yours!!

ParticipantWell the Blu-Ray put to rest the question of the bloody spider-walk being shot during production or added CGI. I wish they would have shown the complete Captain Howdy sequence but…..

KeymasterFor me, The Fear Of God will always be the definitive behind-the-scenes documentary of The Exorcist. It was the first to do what it did so well (even a non-Exorcist fan is captivated watching it) and it's the only documentary to feature Jason Miller before his untimely passing in 2001.
That, and most of the documentaries are quick to delve into Linda Blair's rumoured problems and give everything a drifty-photo E! vibe. Very uncool. Like ekm says (above):
…simply improves with age, particularly when viewed against what passes for “special features” in this day and age.
I was extremely happy to discover The fear Of God would be included on the Blu-ray along with Roizman's footage. It really does make it the ultimate Exorcist item.

ParticipantSome more Blu-ray interviews: Bloody Disgusting, Maxim, USAW (Linda), USAW (Friedkin).

ParticipantOne entertaining feature on DVDs/Blu-Ray is the language feature.
Watching key scenes of The Exorcist while cycling through the surprisingly long list of spoken languages with the remote's audio button, can be hilarious! Especially the voice actors used for the demon.
For instance, the German version has Regan speaking backwards in both male and female voices.
The Polish version just has a male voice translating everyone's lines over the original soundtrack.
Have fun!

ParticipantThe Italian one is pretty ok … they used an old Italian actress with deep voice.

ParticipantIt's heerree!!!! I'm going to try that languages thing =P

ParticipantJust realized the commetaries are the same from the 25th and TVYNS. Very disappointed as especially TVYNS version is possibly the worst commentary I have ever heard. After 10 mins Friedkin pretty much just describes the scene for you. Nice if youre blind but otherwise useless. It would have been nice if they would have gotten a third party like Mark Kermode involved for a new commentary with both Friedkin and Blatty together. Maybe in another 10 years….

ÂThinking about it this way, I'm kind of glad they're missing from the latest version– although, like you and many others, I was surprised. They were kinda cool.
I am glad theyre gone too. They just seemed so amaturish to me. I still would like to see the “tongue” version of the spider-walk thrown in…..

That's a great idea! I'm always fascinated by what Kermode has to say– and not just about The Exorcist. His movie reviews are phenomenal. His book on The Exorcist is especially brilliant — still the best book about the film I've ever read.
It's a shame that the same commentaries have just been rehashed, but first-timers would be oblivious to this fact. Like you say, perhaps Kermode can be part of the next format release. (They have to do an Ultimate 40-year Anniversary release in 2013, don't they? Hint-hint, wink-wink.)

ParticipantI too enjoy Kermode's book. I only wish he would write a more in-depth version when the film celebrates its 40th birthday. Cap, I believe we'll see a 40th anniversary edition of The Exorcist and then the 50th anniversary edition and then …
I really didn't expect the FOG to be any different than what it was in 2000. However, I too would have enjoyed an updated version.
Think about how great a 40th Anniversary Edition of The Exorcist in a hologram box set would be in the evil year of 13?

PS: My BR has something to note on the Special Features for the BTS material. I have a box to click on for commentary by Friedkin and then I have a choice for subtitles on that particular screen. I can then choose a second radial button for “O without subtitles.” However, the first radial button is a choice to include subtitles and the only choice is the Asian text right before the “O without subtitles.” Anyone get this, too?
