ParticipantI've checked all over the web, and don't see anything about “The Exorcist” being released on Blu-ray. Â I'd heard it's going to be rereleased in 2013 (the other Blu-ray editions are out of print), but can't find any more news. Â Forgive me if I've missed anything on this site, but do any of you know anything on this topic? Â Thanks!

ParticipantNot only does amazon have it for $3.99 today, Best Buy does, too! Â The 40th Anniversary edition must be coming out soon. Â I've never seen a never-opened/brand new classic movie go for so cheap in my life!

:: A Smattering Of News   Â
   ÂSome news from Bill Blatty regarding upcoming releases. Merry Christmas!
“A smattering of news: The Exorcist play had a most successful (at least in terms of sellout audiences for six weeks) and will now move to London; Tor/Forge is republishing The Ninth Configuration as a trade paperback and will be offering my entire backlog of work in digital form, which pleases me since I feel that my comic novels are probably my best. Oh, well, at least I actually enjoyed writing them; and next year, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Exorcist film Warner Brothers will put out a new high def Blu-ray with lots of new features, including a 40-minutes doc featuring a revisiting the tiny guest house in which I wrote the novel and reminiscing about it, plus some never-before-seen footage of an interview about the 1949 case of possession with Fr. Eugene Gallegher, the Jesuit priest in whose class at Georgetown U. I first heard about it; and, finally, I'm thinking of a plan for a new book for readers who, like you, are searching, and have — at least for now — abandoned a terror novel of which I've completed only about 70 pages. It's what they call “an entertainment,” whereas the faith book is an apostolic work.”

ParticipantThis is BS. I shelled out money last year for the bluray and now WB is making and releasing a better quality with more bonus features so people like me will have to buy it again.

ParticipantJSM, there have been several articles online since October mentioning the TBA 40th anniversary blu-ray. Just Google and you'll find pretty much the same information about a late 2013 release date.
Ratboy, I think you may be reading (or I am mis-reading) the words “new high def Blu-ray” that Blatty mentions in Ryan's post. I would assume Blatty means new packaging and the 40-minutes of extras because I can't imagine the quality of the blu-ray will change because Friedkin and Roizman did such a great job the first time around. In fact, it's flawless.
As far as purchasing another blu-ray with a different box cover or special packaging or an extra few minutes of video, I will pass, too.

ParticipantI just really hope the cover art isn't like the “Extended Director's Cut.” Â The Region 2 Blu ray is like that, and if were there (R2), I'd not be happy. Â IMO, they should preserve the original cover artwork. Â I know it's “all about money” (and perhaps attracting people to the film by a different picture), but they should never mess with a classic, successful, original film's “trademark,” if you will. Â Father Merrin and the light shining down IS “The Exorcist” to many of us.

ParticipantI agree. Such an iconic logo if you will. 😀
