I have no qualms with either of you and you are both dedicated members of captainhowdy.com, but please try and cool your posts down a little. Disagree, sure – but personal attacks or name calling is getting too overboard. Please remember to show some respect even to those who are merely reading along.
Thanks, guys.

ParticipantSorry Cap. I’m done posting on it. It’s all pretty lame anyway……

ParticipantI expected more out of something crafted by Rob Zombie.
Then again, what remake based so faithfully on a classic was ever decent? Psycho, Omen, Halloween…
Argh-sigh. At least we have the originals and not just the lifeless counterfeits.
M.I.K.E.

Nosferatu, King Kong… 😛 Those are the only two I can think of, though.

ParticipantKing Kong remake sucked ass that was directed by a one trick pony who’s now nothing more than a fat bearded, four eyed glasses wearing dork who dresses like a slob and doesn’t wear shoes.
Peter Jackson did okay with Lord of The Rings but now he’s nothing more than a remake re-imagining hack.
I laughed when King Kong bombed at the box office.

Errr, how? You’re entitled to your own opinion on the film and I can understand you saying that about Rob Zombie, but not Peter Jackson. Have you actually seen all his movies? One trick pony I think not…
Fat bearded, four eyed glasses wearing dork who dresses like a slob and doesn’t wear shoes.
Actually, he was that BEFORE King Kong. He’s quite thin now. He lost all his weight making KK.
Peter Jackson did okay with Lord of The Rings but now he’s nothing more than a remake re-imagining hack.
Just like the ‘one trick pony’ comment, how? He has remade one film, which won 3 oscars, and is now working on something new and original. How exactly does that make him only a remake hack now?
You can’t go and make a bunch of stupid comments with no valid points to back them up at all…

Well I’ve seen Frighteners which I thought was pure crap.
Then I saw Lord of the Rings which I thought was okay.
Then he jumps on the remake/re-imagining fetish with the other no talent hacks such as Rob Zombie, David Eick and Michael Bay and does King Kong, which I thought was pure crap and those were my reasons for calling him a one trick.
We’re in the worse decade of movies and TV because Hollywood is now run by no-talent re-imaging remaking hacks and today’s idiotic ADD movie goers that keep paying money to go see them.
which won 3 oscars,
Yeah.. tech awards for sound editing, special effects.
Nothing prestigous.
The movie was a box office bomb.

I did not know that. Good for him.

Really?
I did not know that.
Good, we need new fresh material.
You can’t go and make a bunch of stupid comments with no valid points to back them up at all…
After witnessing the pure crap that was Rob Zombie’s Halloween and upon rumors of an Exorcist and Jaws remake… I’ve reached my boiling point.
So I lumped Peter Jackson in there because he is part of the problem of what is wrong with Hollywood today because his last movie was a remake.
Hollywood sucks!!!

ParticipantI really don’t think he made the film to please others as much as himself, it was his own geeky little dream. But at least he actually cares for the original film and put everything he had into the remake. I’m just glad he did it before some real hack came in a ruined it (it was bound to happen soon or later).
Have you seen Braindead, Bad Taste, or Meet The Feebles? Arguably some of his best work, especially Braindead. It’s the low-budget horror gems that I really like him for.

All remakes are bad IMO. It doesn’t matter who does them. There is no talent what so ever in doing remakes

No I have never seen those movies but I’d be happy to check them out.
Low budget doesn’t bother me considering that most directors seem to be at their best when working with in the confines of a limited budget.
Look no further than George Lucas when he directed TX1138 and American Graffiti (both films had low budgets) and IMO were his best work.
Even Star Wars Episode IV had the smallest budget compared to the rest of the saga and he did a great job directing it.
I don’t know what happened to Geoarge Lucas’s abilities afterwards.
The same could be said about John Carpenter’s early work, Assualt on Precient 13 and Halloween. Both movies were lowbudget which were far superior than then their big budget remakes.
So yes I’m interested in checking out Peter Jackson’s low budget early work.
PS are you the same Justin from Bloody News?
If so.. what happened to that place?
November 19, 2007 at 11:59 PM #19577Justin
ParticipantIf you like Evil Dead then you should like Bad Taste and Braindead (the latter being probably the goriest, OTT film I’ve ever seen).
And yeah, same Justin. No idea what happened to it though? You’d have to ask Cap.

ParticipantWell I’m more into suspence rather than gore but I’ll still give it a try.

ParticipantDidn’t antisipate liking the remake by Zombie. While he has taste and knowledge in the horror genre, his earlier pics were far to derivitive and came off as pale imitations. That opening murder sequence involving a young MM beating to death a bullying jerk drew an unusal response from me; empathy. I should have felt nothing for these pretty unlikable charactors and viewed them contextually as slasher movie fodder. It was Zombies’ ability to extract that very personal response and carry thru on it til the end of the picture that elevates this one above the seven movies which proceeded it. It’s not as good a pic as the Carpenter classic but it’s very good. And the stunt casting was brilliant and respectful.

Participantkokumo,
I guess we’ll agree to disagree my friend because IMO that remake was offensively pure crap.

ParticipantThe review I wrote when I saw it:
Halloween (2007) (2 stars-out of 4)
Heavy Metal artist turned film maker Rob Zombie gives us his ‘vision’ of the classic horror film “Halloween”, with this new remake.Being a HUGE fan of the original film I went into the theater with mixed emotions. I was glad to see Michael Myers on the big screen again, but nervous about just what Zombie would do with this opportunity.
Zombie fans should be pleased. Many of his “trademarks” are in this film: Foul Language (The ‘F’ word is uttered in some form over 10 times in the first 10 minutes alone)
Blood and gore (We are treated to many close-ups of people covered in blood, suffering, whimpering; and a baseball bat is put to a very wicked use)
A “White Trash” family, (The family of young Michael Myers) and Long Hair. (Michael has long, stringy hair through-out the film.)
Zombie is no amateur. He knows how to make a horror film. It may not be suited for all tastes, but regardless, it gets your attention.
But what about fans of the 1978 version? How will they feel about this new film? Speaking for myself, it was not as bad as I expected (and maybe wanted) but not as good as it could have been.
Zombie gambles that we want to know the back story of young Michael. Where as the 1st film spends about 12 minutes on the young Meyers and his escape as an adult many years later, Zombie spends 45. But what do we learn from this? Do we see the exact event that pushed Myers over the edge? I say ‘No’. Daeg Faerch as the young Michael is very good. And Malcom McDowell as Dr. Loomis is fantastic. But in the end, Michael’s motivations are still elusive.
The last part of the film follows the 1978 film pretty close.(Though Zombie does change the ending) But given just under an hour to cram everything in, it feels rushed. The three girls stalked by Myers are not given enough screen time to make us care about them. Laurie Strode played by Scout Taylor-Compton, fares the best. If only more screen time had been given to her, and other characters. The cast is very strong, but wasted for the most part.
Some scenes and dialog are taken straight from the 1978 film. While this is good to see, it only reminds us of how much better the 1978 film was.
It is evident that Rob Zombie is a fan ‘Halloween’. But in this case, ‘more’ does not mean ‘better’.
And if you have watched the ‘bootleg’ version of this film, be warned, that the ending has been changed!!!!!!!
