ParticipantThe Shining for sure. I still think Poltergeist and Jaws are still pretty scary movies that hold up.

ParticipantJaws! What a great PG film, it scared the crap of me when I was in my youth. If you’ve ever been swimming after seeing that film and something hit your leg in the water, you knew you were a goner! 🙂

KeymasterBen, great list – though I am a little surprised to find JAWS missing! :O

Participant“Rosemary’s Baby”. Watching it now over a plate of liver. The 1973 version of “The Wicker Man” (is it a horror pic or a very dark musical comedy) is always worth a look especially for those interested in religeous themes. It is nearly a perfect film of paganism & sacrifice in the modern age.

ParticipantDefinitely Rosemary’s Baby! Polanski does a great job without showing you anything. (Mia Farrow got ripped off when she didn’t win the Academy Award).

ParticipantHi Guys.
I just watched a movie called Eraserhead. Has anyone heard of it? Do you think it would rival the Exorcist? Might be a candidate!

ParticipantI like David Lynch’s films, and this is a unique beginning feature. However, Eraserhead doesn’t make a dent in The Exorcist by comparison, IMO.

ParticipantJohn Carpenter’s The Thing–hands down.

ParticipantYeah, jguthrie … another winner by Carpenter. I personally think it outranks his original Halloween by a long shot (OH NO, HERE COME THE HALLOWEEN RESPONSES!). 🙂

ParticipantAbsolutely father….I even read how it compared to the Exorcist in The Thing tribute article in Rue Morgue magazine…in a hundred years, when people mention Carpenter…they will first think of The Thing…(and don’t get me wrong, I love Halloween.)

ParticipantCan anyone think of some examples of Horror/Religious genre films that you would consider to be on par with the Exorcist?
September 27, 2009 at 11:59 PM #22015fatherbowdern
ParticipantYes … and let us pray that Rob Zombie does NOT make an naive attempt to slaughter The Thing!
