I’m with you on this but if you listen more closely to Linda’s voice, it sounds like it’s dubbed. Kinda like an old kung-fu movie. There was probably another voice talent for Reagan’s “normal” non, full-blown Mercedes demon voice.

I’m with you there Fadda. Dubbed or not any 14yo would figure out what was happening I don’t care what decade it was. I mean didn’t she read the script? LMAO. She knew what it was but was probably pressured into “believing” she didn’t to draw away negative attention towards having a young person in this “pornographic” scene. The presence of this scene in the Exorcist has always fascinated me. I mean even then there were Kiddie Porn laws on the books and its pretty hard to believe that radical US Christians that in some states prosecute people for up to 30 years in jail for a mere six non-sexual nudes of children could stand for what Linda did in this role!

Yeah, folks, I agree. I think Linda is just going along with the lore that Friedkin wanted to her along with.

I have never ever believed Linda when she said she didn’t have any idea of what masturbation was about. Perhaps not in terms of the “word,” but it’s her mouth forming the words, “Let Jesus fuck you,” on two occasions in that scene PLUS the, “Fuck me,” scene.

It really doesn’t matter if it’s her voice. The fact is, The Exorcist was originally filmed with her voice so that it could be altered (like the ad that’s on youtube somewhere). The voice altering didn’t work, so Friedkin turned to McCambridge. But, if Linda really wants us to believe that she didn’t know what she was doing and what the word “fuck” meant at her age, she’s really belittling folks with a crock a shit.

Come clean, Linda. You didn’t live in a cave and you weren’t some sheltered young girl who attended a religious private school and sang in the Baptist choir. Yeesh! Just don’t say anything to make us think you were an angel playing the devil.

Perhaps she is trying to distance herself being a christian now and the words, actions, etc she did in the movie.

How do you know Linda is a Christian?

On that same anniversary dvd and i’m
paraphrasing she said “As a Christian,
we don’t talk about the devil”

She said she raised as a Christian. Everything she says, she says in the past tense, refering to her upbringing. She makes no mention of her current religious belief.

I don’t understand why it’s so hard to believe that she didn’t know what she was doing. You can’t measure children now, being as precocious and aware as they are, with kids over 30 years ago. I don’t find it so hard to believe that she was just following a script. She might say ‘Fuck’ but it doesn’t mean she knows what it conotes.

Jen: What kind of naive world do you live in? Were you around 30-years ago? Children knew about sex back then too! You are too easily buying into this bullshit we are constantly being sold about the puritanism of children that is nothing but a load of garbage.

As for her religious beliefs, does she not wear a cross around her neck, which could be a clue. Let me know I really can’t remember off hand.

Oh shut up, I’m not fucking stupid. I know what kids are like, funnily enough I was one, one who knew things I ‘shouldn’t’. Where in my post did I give any impression that that I believed in that kind of bullshit? You onyl have to talk to someone who is now in their 40s or above to know that kids now are much more informed than they ever were. I’m not saying at all that they didn’t know, they did, but they will agree that kids now are much more precocious and inform. All I’m saying is, why is it so hard to believe that she might not have known what it meant?

Well I guess ignorance is an ugly thing we like to deny. Personally I think its a good thing if children today are more sexually educated than previous generation. I think any kind of education is a positive thing for children. I suppose it could be possible she legitimately didn’t understand but I should hope by 14 she would. As for the bit about talking to anyone in their 40’s, sure, people may had been more naive in the past, but I think there’s also a tendency to look at the past through shaded glasses. I had a bizarre conversation with a customer once doing door-to-door sales (a job that I incidentally didn’t excel at). We were talking about crime and he was furious about how much the crime rate had increased (something not supported by statistics) I told him that I thought there was more crime when the economy was poor and he said that his mother lived through the Great Depression and there was no crime then. WHAT?! No crime during the Great Depression? What planet was he living on?? Also didn’t the great depression trigger World War II? Look at all the crimes that took place during that conflict. I just don’t understand how people that are able to thrive in this world, own homes etc. can have such a distorted view of the past!

Well, after reading these replies, I’m still under the impression that Blair is lying about not knowing what she was saying or what she was doing.

Remember that Blatty AND Friedkin were looking for a very mature 12- to 14-year-old to play the part and they both, in various interviews, said Linda fit that mold very well.

I grew up in a big intercity, like Linda. I was about her age when she played the part. Trust me, if you hear or see the word “Fuck” and don’t know what it means by the time you’re 14, you’re going to get “Fucked” and know what it means right away. If she really was that naive (HA!), I find it incredibly hard to fathom that a 14-year-old girl wouldn’t ask why she was saying, “Let Jesus fuck you,” while slamming a crucifix in a box soaked with fake blood located directly in her crotch!

I stand by what I said earlier, and with hatter’s comment, “She’s full of SHIT!”

I’ve watched all of the various interviews on the anniversary issue but Linda’s doesn’t sit right with me.

She talks about the screen test and having to say all of those horrible words and then she say’s of filming the masturbation scene that she was thrusting the crucifix in a box of red goo but had no idea what it meant.

    SAY WHAT???????????

From the scene when her doctors arrive and she’s thrashing about and then Pazuzu takes over…You can clearly hear Linda’s voice of “F* Me”, “F* Me”

And then the crucifix again where she’s saying “let Jesus * *” yes, Mercedes voice was dubbed in place of her’s but Linda is absolutely saying those same words and thrusting the crucifix down, there’s no way she didn’t know what it was about…..

Perhaps she is trying to distance herself being a christian now and the words, actions, etc she did in the movie.

Yeah if I had an extremely sheltered child I would put her in the Exorcist too!
