ParticipantPazuzu was forced to leave when Karras died, leaving it open for anyone else to inhabit his body… I guess. So the Devil – or some demons (maybe even Pazuzu) helped the Gemini get in, and they share his body. Or it could be just the Gemini inside, with the demons helping him do things.
I think that’s right, it is all quite confusing. π I am sure it is Pazuzu in the original though. Remember, the demon is a liar.

KeymasterI believe it is definitely Pazuzu in the original – and I like to think it is also Pazuzu calling himself Gemini in Legion. Remember – the demon is a liar! π

ParticipantGood ideas, guys. Never thought of those!
Heck, maybe Paz never left Karras’ body in the 1973 film. I know, I know, heresy. π

ParticipantHi guys,
thanks for the thoughts,
I wonder what Blatty himself envisioned when he was writing the novel. The end of legion implies that pazuzu and all of the other demons are a part of Lucifer, shattered peices trying desperately to re-form as an angel,This would suggest that there is no separate entity, known as Lucifer-yet puzuzu alludes to him in the original. But,yes,I know, the demon is a liar.
The Gemini alluses to The demon as “certain parties” and “friends” when he mentions the earlier exorcism of Regan, stating that those parties were not pleased that they had to flee.I would wonder if it was ever JUST Pazuzu in the original, but a myriad of demons-hence “I am no-one”.
Here is where the Boorman film may be interesting. It developed the notion that once the evil touched you,you became binded to it,like Sharon.Again the notion that it was many and not one.The film ,however, does name Pazuzu as the main demon though.
Did the demons pop in and out of the gemini’s head,in the host body or was it Pazuzu?
I would love it if Blatty himself ever made this clear in an old interview or something!January 10, 2007 at 11:59 PM #16251Father Lamont

See, I think that is one of the weaker points of Exorcist II. I hate that Sharon died and it was corny that Ft. Lamont started smooching on the evil Regan.

I didn’t like that either. I hope you remove that from your fan edit.

ParticipantDon’t get me wrong!
I meant that I thought the concept of Evil speading like a disease, never totally leaving those that it touched, somewhat interesting as it sort of backed up the Legion story “we are many”.
The characterisation of Sharon was terrible. It didn’t even seem like the same actress! She was smart, classy and competent in the original. She became sarcastic,two-dimentional and creepy in The Heretic.I think that that was down to poor character development.
ugh..It was terrible.Lamont all over Regan sort of looked like Burton was just drunk and not acting at all.
Perhaps I’m being harsh.
I’m still no closer to sorting out My Pazuzu/legion query.I think I’ll compile all the evidence for and against it being Pazuzu in the third movie and post it later.
Thanks,as always.

I have always gone along with the idea of the demon not being able to leave the body it has possessed ‘just like that!’ I have always thought it could only leave when the body dies which is why they spend all their time trying to get the body to kill itself or just through neglect so to speak..starvation etc etc. So when Karrs invites the demon into him, thereby saving Regan, I think he knew that Karras would kill himself so took the easy way out cos he knew they wouldnt let Regan die and his soul would be an easier one to aquire. Dont forget, most of the film, Karras is battling with his faith and I think that was what it was about. Not the soul of a 12 year old girl but the soul of a fallen priest. Much better for the notches on his bed post dont you think! Maybe not explaining myself very well. Most possesion cases are involving young girls, possibly cos they are easier to possess. But I do think the ultimate goal was Karras. Over to you before I start babbling!

ParticipantThe more i think about it, the more I think that it was never JUST Pazuzu in the original.
“Where is Regan?”
“In here with us”“It will bring us closer together”
“you and Regan?”
“you and us”
When merrin states there is “only one”, I think perhaps that he is referring to the fallen angel. They are all part of the one fallen entity.
Sure pazuzu was there, we saw the statue, the evil face etc.He seemed to be the dominant evil but it makes more sense if the being known as “Legion” was there from the beginning.
A poster on another thread pondered as to why Pazuzu or whoever managed to Dispose of Morning quite so quickly.Remember that this was not part of the original novel.Morning was created solely for the film so was not part of Blatty’s plan.Afterall, the demon’s power was a psycological attack. What happened to Morning would have been “far too vulgar a display of power”.January 18, 2007 at 11:59 PM #16362granville1
ParticipantI agree that E2’s characterization of Sharon was botched. In E1 she was sweet, cute, witty, vulnerable – and even at the end her affection for Chris is obviously stated. In E2, she’s a bitchy/witchy (get the black witch-like raincoat)stranger. She is meant to be perceived not only as suffering, but also as weird. The script’s utter disrespect for her is exhibited when Lamont asks her if she’s tried prayer, and she reacts cynically. Lamont, who always has his head up his ass, could have offered her some real help – you know, like any of the clergy in the novel or the first film, would have done. Karras, Dyer, even the university president and the bishop, were all seriously interested and concerned people. Yet Lamont is so busy chasing his personal demons and subjective goals, that he isn’t interested in helping Sharon in her crisis (if only he had not survived the Ethiopian priests’ stoning attempt). Then, of course, the script turns Sharon into a burning cinder. What a lousy thing to do, but it’s totally consistent with the Boorish Boorman “take” on E2. After all, he was on record as having despised the original film, which makes it inconceivable why he was allowed to take the helm on the first sequel.

ParticipantAnd didn’t he reject the offer to direct the original film, too? π I think so. Had he been interested in the first place or not, at least history played out with Boorman doing the terrible sequel with someone else doing the original. And good thing he didn’t direct BOTH. Keeping his name and “genius” constricted to The Heretic isn’t all bad. π

ParticipantBoorman has done some Good work, But by watching EXORCIST 2 you wouldn’t expect it, and My first impression was “Was He Drunk? What was He Smoking? what was He Snorting?

ParticipantYes. Excaliber dazzles and Deliverance is disgustingly harrowing.
Good stuff. And I’ve avoided the rest by managing to sleep through Zardoz and the calling it quits. π

ParticipantWe should be grateful that Boorman didn’t mix’n’match from another of his films:
= = =Regan: Let’s just see ya drop them drawers, Merrin.
Merrin: This is ridiculous.
Karras to Regan: If we want your money, we’ll take it.
Regan to Karras: Ya better get ready to do some prayin’, boy, an’ ya better pray real good.
Karras to Regan: I’ve been prayin’ all along, are ya deaf? Squeal like a hog, boy!
Demon to Karras: Ah’ve been doin’ that all along, are ya deaf?
Merrin shoots Regan through the chest with an arrow: Take that, ya toothless bastard.
Karras to Merrin: What have you done? What about the law?
Merrin to Karras: What law?
Karras to Merrin: Is this all just a game to you?
Merrin to Karras: Yeah. The biggest, most real game ever.
Kinderman, bursting into the room: Don’t you boys ever do nothin’ like this again, ya hear?
= = =… and other such atrocities.

ParticipantHi guys, this is my first post here.I’ve been a fan of the exorcist movies for many years now, particularly the first and the third which were based on Blatty’s own books.
I have a question that has been bugging me for years and I was hoping for a discussion about it.It’s regarding the identity of who really possessed Regan.
In the original book,it is implied that it is the demon Pazuzu. We read about his statue at the beginning and when he claims that he is the devil to karras,he later retracts the statement, hissing that the real devil would not hold this lie against him.In the film it cuts that peice of dialogue and implies that it is in fact Lucifer.
Fast forward to Legion. There is no mention of Pazuzu.(he was heavily characterized in the heretic but seeing as blatty didn’t write that,I’m not taking it into account re;the continuity of the books)Furthermore,The demon claims to be……..many.Is this why merrin stated in the original that 2there is only one”, as in only one vessil for many. The demon cackles in the original that Regan is “in here with US”
At the end of Legion,Kinderman wonders if legion is not indeed Lucifer, all the broken pieces of the fallen angel trying to reassemble and become an angel once more. So who was the demon?
Why was pazuzu not mentioned at all in Legion? Was it pazuzu in the original?
can anybody offer a thought or opinion?
Thanks in advance,
jay. -
