ParticipantOh, a DVD? I'll buy it if it's not too much.

ParticipantThis outstanding edit brings to life the film that should of been.
This edit removes all unnecessary scenes and as a result the film flows
better and actually now makes much more sense.Added footage involving the priest in the church put a massive smile
on my face and gave the scene the extra shock it needed. The added
footage where Kinderman first meets Gemini/Karras makes that scene
finally work. The only added footage I wasn’t 100% convinced by is the scene at the
end where the Gemini says “I have dreams of a rose…†and it fades in
& out of some dream footage. For me it had the effect of making the
scene feel like 2 separate scenes. But William Pete Blatty was also very
keen on this type of editing, so it is actually in keeping of the style
of the movie. All the removal of Exorcist/possession subplots did nothing but
enchance the film and how Spicediver handled the Nurse Possession at the
end which simple and brilliant. Finally and most importantly, the ending. Having seen some previous
attempts to correct the ending on youtube I was quite apprehensive.
Those cursed bug eyes seem to be a problem no-one could solve. Well…
Spicediver has succeeded where everybody else has failed! The ending not
only works it is also haunting in a way I think Mark Kermode described
when he saw the original Legion. The big bonus for me is that this film from start to fininsh actually
felt different from the Exorcist III. I can’t explain why but
Spicediver’s version has a different air to it and as as result it’s
like watching a whole new movie. Instead of watching the same movies
with corrections, like most edits are.As an Exorcist fan Spicediver’s edit of The Exorcist is in all
likelyhood the closet I’m ever going to get to seeing Legion. Whether it
will appeal to anyone outside the Exorcist or Horror community I don’t
know, but this is a fine piece of work that should be scene by all edit
fans.April 1, 2011 at 10:52 PM #24704cxx
ParticipantHi there, I'm a big Exorcist fan and have been coming to this site and reading the forums for quite some time now.. Spicediver's fantastic edit of Exorcist III made me want to join to share my views!
I have to say, while the edit isn't perfect it might well be the closest we come to ever seeing what Legion, the movie, was to begin with – unless that 'lost' footage is actually found, one can pray. I agree with Father Merrin that the film felt different from start to end. I don't know if it's related to consciously knowing I was watching a different edit or because it actually was that different. There were details that stood out more I hadn't noticed before, the plot somehow made more sense and the mood of the film was even more creepy and haunting. The original Exorcist III always gives me goosebumps all over at certain times, but it happened even more watching this edit. Very spine-tingling and haunting!
There are some possible spoilers below, so if you do want to know yet don't read!
Â
…….
Â
Â
Â
What I felt worked:
– The removal of the exorcist sub-plot really improved the film and made it seem a lot less cheap and forced, and of course naturally closer to Blatty's original story.
– The added footage of the priest in the church was completely unexpected and sent a chill down my spine. While not technically perfect it really does enhance that scene, well done.
– The sharper edits in places of certain scenes – I'll have to re-watch the original to figure out exactly what was missing, but then again that means it was done perfectly when I didn't even notice! The edits certainly made the movie a lot tighter and to the point.
Â
Â
What I felt didn't work:
– As Father Merrin mentions above, the added footage of the rose/fall down the steps towards the end distracts from the scene a bit and does make it seem a bit chopped up. And it's also the second time we see the fall down the steps so it feels like it's retreading old ground. I like the idea, but I'm not sure it works in the context. Then again I'm so used to seeing nothing but the gloomy cell in that particular scene, so others might feel different.
– The nurse collapsing in Kinderman's house at the end – I don't quite get what the sound of the gun shot is meant to signify. A premonition? The Gemini killer giving up? I might be being stupid but I would love to get it cleared up.
– The tomb stone at the end – just a personal preference but I felt it was a bit cheesy and overly explanatory. Then again, I do know the story well.
Â
Overall though, excellent job considering what limited materials you did have available! Next time I convince friends to watch this movie with me I'll definitely be playing your edit. Thanks for putting the work in and thanks for sharing!

Father Merrin and Cxx,
Thanks for the reviews guys and I'm really glad you enjoyed it.Â
It seems a common thread on what *didn't* work is my adding dream footage to Dourif's “I have dreams of a rose…” line of dialogue while in his cell. I now think you and others are correct: its unnecessary and possibly detracts from the scene. In fact, I'm going to restore that scene to its original state and replace the current edit.
Cxx – I'm surprised you didn't get the possesed patient/nurse's demise – the 2nd cop shoots her! Admitedly there's no cutway shot of him reaching for his gun, because no footage was available. It was the best I could do. There *is* a shot of Kindermans wife screaming and then covering her ears (it's a reversed shot – originally it was: hands on ears, hands off ears and scream). I inserted this a split-second before the shooting to suggest she's anticipatating it.
As to what happened in Blatty's directors cut, I can think of no other logical conclusion to that attack scene other than the nurse's non-fatal shooting. There would be no exorcist distracting the Gemini, and there would be no death of his father to distract/kill him either. The suplot about his father and its link to the Gemini's death is entirely absent from the shooting script – it has to be, otherwise Kinderman's execution ending makes no sense. It only exists in Blatty's 1st screenplay adaption of the novel and that version of the script was never greenlit by any studio.
cheers, SD.

You know, moments after posting my review the other day I did think just that to myself! I re-watched the scene and had a big 'ahaaa' moment. Thanks for clearing it up too, though I think most people will get it!

Having done a few fanedits myself I was very impressed with how spicediver handled that scene. When you're dealing with limited footage you do have to think outside of the box sometimes to make a scene work and I think spicediver's alterations of the nurse and exorcism scene were perfect examples of that.

That's very big of you to go back and alter your edit based on the comments of others. Seriously man you wouldn't believe how touchy or offended some editors get when it comes to comments made about their edits. So you've gone up even further in estimations as editor, not because you're going back and changing you edit but because you've taken our comments in the positive and constructive way that they were intended 🙂
Plus this means I'm now gonna own both the new and now rare “Dreams of a Rose” version of your Legion edit! It's the smiles that keep us going. Don't you think?

Hi epicwin,
Can you please send me a PM with a detailed description of the error and I'll pass on to the site Admin?
You can also try another site http://www.fanedit.info – you will need the free file management progrom Jdownloader installed first.
