ParticipantThe Exorcist Announced on Blu-ray Share
Posted June 21, 2010 06:23 AM by Juan CalongeWarner Home Video has announced The Exorcist for release on October 5, in a two-disc Digibook edition, packaged with a personal letter written by director William Friedkin inside a 40-page booklet. Both the extended director’s cut and the theatrical version of this 1973 horror masterpiece will be included, remastered from the original camera negative. Three new documentaries, produced by acclaimed documentarian Laurent Bouzereau, are also included exclusively in the Blu-ray edition.
Regarding the two versions, director William Friedkin says, “After my final cut of the original The Exorcist, I took out 12 more minutes before we actually released it in theatres. Years later, Bill Blatty asked if I’d consider reviewing some of that rejected footage (which he always felt should have remained) with an eye towards putting it into a new version. Bill gave me the best piece of material I’ve ever received and because of that and because the film had such a major reputation over some 25 years, I agreed to revisit all these scenes. When I saw them, I came to realize that Bill was, in fact, right. With technical advances, scenes that didn’t work then could now be fixed with CGI and there were others that I thought strengthened the spiritual aspect of the film. Warner agreed and released a whole new theatrical print in 2000 which we called The Exorcist: The Version You’ve Never Seen. And I now agree with Blatty that this is the best and most complete version.”
Said Jeff Baker, WHV Executive VP & General Manager, Theatrical Catalog, “Generally speaking, sourcing relevant and provocative film assets for older films (30 years and older), is difficult, and more often than not, proves to be unsuccessful. The never before seen behind the camera treasure trove of material that consumers will see in The Exorcist Blu-ray release is one of the great finds in modern day home entertainment history. Laurent Bouzereau, an acclaimed documentarian, has blended this archival rare footage with updated present day interviews to create a masterpiece that will be treasured and studied for decades to come.”

I still think the bloody spider-walk scene was CGI’d and that makes me think so even more……

ParticipantBoth versions are remastered. Does that mean the original version in the blueray set has that cold “blue” tint to it? I prefered the original how it was… ummm… originally lol.

Does that answer your question? This is gonna be ultimate!

ParticipantTHIS MAKES MY DAY!!!!! As far as make-up tests, I wonder if we’re going to see something new are they just gonna rehash the same stuff. Either way, 3 new docs and a 1080p master of the film is worth the price of the disc!!

I, too, hope Friedkin didn’t punch up the blue tinting. In fact, I hope he removed it completely. It added nothing to the film and I think it actually broke the documentary feel. It was too other-worldly. The original 1970s colors were much more of the era and made the film more realistic. Flesh tones are flesh colored, not blue. This is Regan we’re talking about not Violet Beauregarde from Willy Wonka. There are no blueberries here! I’d LOVE to have a home version of the film whose coloring resembles the original VHS video version I rented so many years ago that shocked and scared me half to death! I only hope that “remastered from the original camera negatives” means the Blu-ray edition of The Exorcist will be everything BUT blue!
And while I’m ranting, is now a good time to mention that I hate the Digibook artwork? What’s up with “The” being a different color than “Exorcist”? It looks strange. I understand the graphic designers were trying to do something different, however it just doesn’t work in this case.
At least they retained the original typeface.

Glad they’ve scrapped the ‘Version You’ve Never Seen’ title…

ParticipantI like the cover for the DVD version of The Exorcist but I don’t enjoy how, for those of us who haven’t yet jumped on the Blu-ray bandwagon, The Exorcist: The Version You’ve Never Seen or rather The Exorcist: Extended Director’s Cut will be the only cut of the film available in standard definition. It’s as if the original theatrical version of the film never existed, and as such it’s only available on disc 2 of the Blu-ray edition. If anything, the theatrical cut of The Exorcist should be on disc 1 and The Version You’ve Never Seen/Extended Director’s Cut should be the addendum on disc 2. Why give TVYNS top billing when the theatrical cut of the film is what started it all?

ParticipantGet2Me, are you referring to the pic posted by CamelWide on Blu-ray.com? If you are, I think WB is trying to mix it up with the advertising by using the 1973 original poster and listing Extended Director’s Cut & Original Theatrical Version in reverse. Just a marketing game probably just like swapping names from TVYNS to the Extended Director’s Cut that may sound more intriguing to buyers.
I’m just glad they included the original as well instead of just the God-awful TVYNS with all the CGI crap (including the blood pouring from Regan’s mouth at the finale of the spiderwalk). I do think if WB spent the right amount of time on the original, they will cover up mistakes such as the wires and the makeup/vomit tube apparatus mistake on Dietz.
Thanks to CamelWide for posting this link from BD.com.
Cap, are you going to put a countdown timer on here for the release date? I think you did that one other time for something else, but I can’t remember for what. This is going to be a big deal for us Blu-ray-ophiles!
