Mineo was known about Hollywood as being gay & Kinderman knew his stuff when it came to Hollywood. Maybe it was a playful gay slur. Also John Garfield was an A-list headliner with his name high up on the marquee while Sal never was much of a star & is now remembered mostly for the unsavory manner of his death.

Bit of a dishonest cop, that Kinderman, eh? I mean, doesn’t he say “I lied” at least twice? Once being with regard to Sal Mineo, and the other when he’s getting Chris MacNeil’s autograph. I guess by 1990, when he looks like George C. Scott, he’s too “up there” to lie. 😛

Gay slur, compliment, nope. It was a friendly joke. Having previously defined Karras as resembling John Garfield in Body and Soul where he plays a tough all American boxer who has women fall at his feet, when Karras gives him no help he says he looks like Sal Mineo who whilst still a sex symbol in his heyday, was a pretty boy. Not something a boxer would want to hear.
remember this was written in the late 60s early 70s from the perspective of 2 guys who would have had their heroes defined in the forties and fifties. No self respecting male of that ilk would want to be likened to a short “pretty” model.
