Keymasterfatherbowdern,
Only this discussion forum changes. Everything else about this site remains in tact. All links, posts, images, txt, everything from the main page outward, remains.
As for references and links already here in these forums, they will also remain. I will lock this forum so new posts cant be made, but it will all still be here for anyone to read or refer to, anytime.

ParticipantCool. I’ll just wait and see. Thanks for letting us know, Cap.

ParticipantCap, I’m showing my absolute stupidity on how website blogs work in a public forum. However, I’m still a little lost on the Discussion Forum part. So, here’s what I “think” this means in a non-techy way:
1. Current postings (blog entries), including all links, photos, etc. under the subheadings within a posting in the Discussion Forum section will (after December 8th, 2008) become a separate link; i.e., “Old Posts” or “Whatever the Cap Names it.” This basically means the newly named “old Discussion Forum” will become a link for review or reference only. All postings as mentioned above will not be migrated into the “new Discussion Forum.”
2. A new (and thus empty on December 8, 2008) Discussion Forum will be added to this site utilizing the new software for blogging. This will actually become the “blog central” as we have now under the heading “Discussion Forums.” This new Discussion Forum will be clean slate in pristine condition.
Sorry to be this confused, but I think someone (better than I) can explain this in a “Website Blogs for Dummies” fashion. However, I’m not going to “bash” myself for not knowing because I’ve been successful at figuring how to post a link with a photo on this website and making my own animated avatar! 🙂

KeymasterThat’s OK father, let me elaborate as simply as I can and explain a few things to help you out which the changes that will be occurring:
First of all, nothing is happening on the 8th of December. I typed that these changes would happen ‘December 08’, meaning December 2008. Closer to the new year.
I think your confusion has a lot to do with your understanding of ‘blog’. A blog entry is a news item I post on the main page. These are stored in a certain database and kept archived as part of the site.
Think of it this way: You will be able to visit this site and click on Discussion Forum, like you do now, and this will take you to the new discussion board. There will also be a link called ‘Old Forum’ which will take you to this discussion forum, where all threads and posts will remain existent for referencing.
Everything else about this remains the same, except for a new design and layout. More on that later.
Does this make a little more sense?

ParticipantCap, makes better sense for a non-techy that’s learning. You’re right on my misunderstanding of the “blog” terminology, I believe (see below).
I’m seeing this as a “drill down” in this order:
Website: http://www.captainhowdy.com
Page (or Link?): Discussion Forum
Blogs (Headings): Forum Index
Blog (Blog): FORUM MEMBERS MUST READ!!
Posting: What I’m doing now.Let me know if that’s even more correct. Maybe I will get this with your help!

KeymasterDRATS I missed my December deadline. So what else is new, Captain?
I have found a suitable forum plugin and am just getting this ready to roll it all out in one swooping hit. New sections, new format, new categories, new forum… I continue to underestimate how much work is required!
More details very soon.

KeymasterFriends, we need to have a discussion.
I’ll break it to you straight:
The software running this message forum has been discontinued. The programmers behind this forum have let it go and will no longer be providing updates. The software that runs this blogsite (seperate from the forum) updates to new versions very often, and eventually it will update PAST this forums capabilities; and therefore cause many technical glitches. Glitches I won’t be able to work with.
I loaded this forum software on here a couple of years ago because it was the only forum software that could plugin to my website software with ease. There were no others like it at the time. Now, however, there are many more forum options that can be implemented.
I guess this is a heads-up and an invitation to post suggestions and ideas moving forward…
1. This forum will have to be locked (no more posting) when the new forum is launched (December 08).
2. I am researching the possibility of migrating all these posts to the new forum software, but it looks extremely unlikely. The other forums use completely different database implementation.
3. This forum will remain here for viewing and referencing. It will not be deleted. However keep in mind the website software updates may make it inaccessible over time. There is no telling, unfortunately.
4. The new forum will launch as part of a new-look Exorcist Fansite I have been working on in the background while finishing my studies.
I guess a benefit may be that the new forum software can/might be more heavy with features and options (although I have liked the simplicity of this one…)
Questions, thoughts, suggestions and commiserations welcome here, please.
Captain.

ParticipantLOL! As a software developer I can certainly appreciate the statement “I continue to underestimate how much work is required!”
Does this mean you’ve found a way to import the old forum without having to reset from scratch as previously planned?

ParticipantWhat an excellent masterpiece!

ParticipantWith the new layout, there will undoubtedly be a simpler login mechanism. Thanks for letting me know about the width and formatting of the next forum. Jagged
