There should be a death metal Exorcist II tribute band called Synchronizer. I could so pictuere the insane, indecipherable logo.

Hack as much as humanly possible then cut in all the bug attack footage from Irwin Allens’ Production of the “Swarm”. And add the giant grasshopper glowing over the ruined city from “Quatermass and the pit”

So many to choose from hmmm……

1.Delete a frame of the synch session where Linda blair rolls her eyes, the whole audience began to laugh at that.

2.Cutout out James Earl Jones part.

3.Cutout the song and dance of Regan at school another laugh.

4.Cutout a frame or two of the moutains man fall and it looks like a doll hitting below(and I realize it was) but it cheapend an already questionable production job.

5.Do a better vision layover from the unpossessed to the possessed boy.

I know Linda was older when filming but since Dick Smith did this movie also, I was majorly dissapointed in the makeup, he surely could have made it more of a match than he did afterall that “bedroom scene was supposedly to be from the original exorcist and she was 12.

I don’t want to hear the excuse some might say as “he was trying to bring something a little age range but all of us still have 12 years old and like I said, closer to 12 than what he did.

I actually watched this film yesterday for the first time in 10 years & about 10mins into it I remembered why I haven’t watched it for so long :0

Personally I don’t think this film can be saved. You’d have to get rid of all that synchronizer crap but without that you lose the whole film.

I quite like the Africa stuff (but towards the end even this got boring) but once it’s back in the USA the whole thing falls apart again.

If there was some sort of alternate ending available as a deleted scene maybe you could do something. Otherwise all you’re gonna end up doing is turning a shit film in a crap film & if that’s the case, I really don’t see the point in making it. Sorry.

But hey, if you can pull it off go for it.

I prefer the version of the Heretic that I saw in the 70s, and on VHS in the 80s. Apparently the DVD is the very original version, prior to the harsh reviews that caused Boorman to recut it within a week of its release. But when I finally saw the very original (DVD) version, it was very clear why he NEEDED to cut it. It is much worse than the version that we saw in the 70s and 80s. All that stuff with Sharon dying in the blanket at the end, oh my that was hard to sit through. Please cut out as much of that as you can. Also, cut out as much of Richard Burton’s bad acting when travelling to Washington. And although the soundtrack is interesting, some of the vocalizations could be toned down a bit.
On the positive, I always loved the scene where the house crumbles and he plucks out Regan’s heart.

Cut the whole friggin’ thing and replace it with a letter of apology.

I think the main reason for the film being so poor is that it can’t decide whether it’s about Merrin or Reagan.

I mean Lamont was sent on a task to save the reputation of Merrin yet the movie is barely half way through when the Merrin plot is dropped & the whole emphasis is on Reagan.

I think if you are gonna edit this movie you have to choose whether Merrin or Reagan is the main focal point.

Take a leaf out of the structure of the first film and tell the story of Merrin in Africa at the start, then move to Regan and Father Lamont. Lamont’s failed exorcism from the beginning of EII could also be dealt with as a flashback in the film.

The scifi element of the synchroniser could be downplayed somewhat.

The bit where Regan says “CALL ME BY MY DREAM NAME!” is a scene I’d cut.

Keep James Earl Jones, but put him in black armor with labored breathing.

    “Regan . . . I am your father.”

Basically, take off most of the cheesy lines and the eyes rolling bits from the the first hypnosis scene and the last hypnosis scene at the hotel. Cut part of the first meeting between Lamont and the Cardinal and add in the extended opening of Lamont climbing the hill to the church. Change the ending almost entirely.
-Regan gets inside the house and sees Lamont lying on the floor pointing to her bedroom. She enters the room and sees herself (use flashbacks from the original film, perhaps the masturbation scene, something shocking). Then, we see the cab approaching the house and Lamont approaching the room, and he opens the door to unleash the swarm of locusts. Sharon kills herself, while inside the room. There aren´t two Regans, Regan is now fully possessed, she seduces Lamont but he has a vision of Father Merrin saying “Phillip, you must take my place…” and Lamont starts exorcising Regan. You could use lines of Merrin exorcising Regan from the first movie and put them in the “fighting” scene, so it seems he´s exorcising her, not fighting. No, taking out the evil heart thing also.
The film ends as Lamont dies, and Regan fights the locusts, she looks around and sees Tuskin in state of shock, the police behind her. The film ends with a close-up of Regan´s face.

I think it would be cool to take the African exorcism footage from II and splice it back into the first film when the two priests are deciding on who should do Regan’s exorcism. That’s pretty much the only thing I would keep from II. I still think there is some great footage that is locked up in the Warner vaults somewhere but we’ll never see it.

I would not delete anything. I would just add Dana Plato’s name to the credits. But other than that, I think the film is perfect just the way it is.

Quote: First, I’d get rid of that terrible score. Maybe use existing pieces like Friedkin did in the original.

But the musical score was the highlight of the film.
