This is a common occurrence in the films when one actor is shorter than the other and needs to appear taller. Typically, digging a small ditch or building a platform (depending on your height) works. However, in this scene, we see both Burstyn and Miller walking side by side in a full shot. So, if there is something different about stature, it’s quite undetectable … at least for me.
Well it would not be hard to do with computer but in ’73 I don’t know. Maybe a trick with perspective? I assume that Miller was taller in the original cut as well, not just TVYNS?
I know, I find it very confusing. Especially in the background, I noticed other people who seem to appear towering over both Ellen and Jason, eg, a woman on a bicycle and a man who walks past them.
I don’t want this to sound like a stupid question, but how did they get Jason Miller to appear taller than Ellen Burnstyn when they are walking together? Because I know that in an interview, Ellen once said that Jason was “too short, shorter than me”. And I read that he was about 5ft 5″ and she is 5ft 8 or 7″.
