ParticipantOh, boy, you’re a riot! Sofia to the rescue on the actual smell! She did not fart to my knowledge, but your comment is funny as hell! 🙂

ParticipantHow do you know what the smell was? Farting seems like a reasonable enough explanation no gag intended!

ParticipantWell, it could have been a SBD fart … you know, Silent-But-Deadly Fart. But, I have a feeling it was more closely related to the smell of skunk shit. 😉

ParticipantI thought in the book it did in fact state this.
Maybe I’ve thinking about the book about the supposed real case where they said that the possessed boy flagellated in the presence of the priests, along with spitting at them, swearing at them, etc.

ParticipantYeah. The diary of the real case lists farting and the other things you mention. I’m pretty sure that the sound of fart in The Exorcist would have evoked so much laughter that the scene would be implausible (and that’s not what the two Bill’s were looking for). Can you imagine the scene if you HEAR a fart! 😉

ParticipantAccording to many documented reports of possession there have been instances where a strong sulfer or rotten egg smell has been present.

ParticipantThat sounds more legit Ghetto. I agree that Blatty probably wrote something like that into his novel. After all, he mentions that what Karras is thinking about when he smells Regan’s bedroom. The demon “read his mind” and said something like, “smells like sauerkraut doesn’t it?”

ParticipantSulphur and the Devil. Good combination.
I think they could had done had flagellation sound and made it work if they really tried to.

Participantdsea, how many films have we all scene over the years where a fart is the main scene stealer filled with laughter? They would have taken any seriousness out of that scene by that sound alone no matter how they finagled it. 😉

ParticipantI think it was her breath that was putrid, hence causing the reaction of the others in the room.
October 3, 2008 at 11:59 PM #21062Witch of Endor
ParticipantOne has to consider that these are people that managed to make masturbation and a child swearing etc. etremely creepy. Aren’t those the sort of thing that would normally get giggles?
October 3, 2008 at 11:59 PM #21070fatherbowdern
ParticipantNo, dsea, I think there are undeniably significant differences between between the sound of a fart and young girl slamming a crucifix into her crotch while swearing, “Let Jesus fuck you!”
I do however believe that X is probably onto something with the breath as the source of the foul smell.
We just need Sofia to clarify … she’s the expert on the novel. The scene really isn’t clear, but we know it indeed gagged Chris when it came at her.

ParticipantLOL, this reminds me of a similar question I had while watching the Extended Version of the original 1978 Dawn of the Dead. Near the end of the film, one of the biker guy’s tummy is ripped open to reveal his intestines. For some reason in this version, you’ll hear this loud sound that almost sounds like a fart. Yes, it’s not about ‘the end result’ I’m talking about here– I’m just pondering what that sound effect is and why it is only present in that version. Did the ripping of the gut release excess pressure? The questions can be endless… LMAO! Hopefully, you guys will see how I find this discussion rather satirical. Sorry if I’m not helping it along. 😀 😛

ParticipantOh, I agree with the satire, Greg. The sound of the fart would have been a good laughing point in The Exorcist, just as in the scene when the demonic Regan slides the end table drawer out with its powers. Karras asks, “Did you do that?” and we get the very funny, “Uh, huh,” from the demon. That scene is laughable!
Anyway, maybe Sofia can rescue us from the rotten-egg smells or the SBDF! 🙂

ParticipantI am not Sophia, but I can tell you it was for sure the breath. Maybe you are confusing the part on the book where Karras visits Regan before the Exorcism and she starts (mmmh I don’t the right term in English) having diarrhea (and she asks if he is annoyed by that).
Such a scene wouldn’t work in the movie because as soon people hear this kind of sounds, they start to laugh.
But I remember a short German parody of that scene and they really did the diarrhea stuff. -
